I have a 2001 BWM 330i with an automatic transmission that has had a consistantly annoying problem that I was wondering if anyone had a solution to.

Whenever I press the gas peddle around 20% down I hear a high pitched noise. This noise goes away when I lift off the gas peddle or when I push it further down. This is not a very loud noise but very apparent if the radio is turned off. Also the noise is not dependent on the speed of the car only the position of the gas peddle.

If anyone has a possible solution to this problem then I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you have an aftermarket air intake?

My gruppe m does that but very subtle. But I hear a high whistle like sound. Can hardly hear it now cause of my exhaust.

i have a 2002 325xi and i have noticed that really high-pitched sound, but it's not enough that it bothers me. i occasionally notice it.

i am curious to what the problem is as well...

No, unless you count a K&N filter.
no... can't be that, cause I had a K&N at first and it never did that for me.
It's not the same high-pitcj screech like a loose alternator belt or accessory belt is it?

I doubt it's a belt because it only occurs at a certain position of the gas peddle. Any position besides that exact position and the noise does not occur. I can't imagine that a belt problem could be tied that precisely to the throttle position. Though I'm hardly an expert in the inner workings of a BMW. To me it sounds like an electrical noise. I would tend to think it must be caused by some sort of valve, switch or contact.

I honestly couldn't tell you what it might be unless I hear it. I'm stumped.

Sorry.

I can't imagine that my problem is related to the AC because the noise occurs whether the HVAC system is on or off. It seems to be entirely related to the throttle position. It's kinda like the high pitch noise an old TV will occasionally make. I can generally drown the noise out with the radio. I would love to find a way to fix this problem because it really bothers my wife and it's to the point where she preferes to take our Mazda 3 on long road trips instead of the comfotable BMW. Compared to the BMW the Mazda is not exactly quiet on the interstate.

Thanks for everyones help, I finally solved my problem. I wanted to post my solution since it seems like others may share this problem. It turns out that one of my air hose had a crack in it. After I replaced it the annoying noise went away. The only downside of this fix is that it was extremely difficult to remove and install the bad part. Part number '6' on the attached link is what I had to replace. The tube elbow costed me about $18 at the dealership and several cuts and scraps on my hand.

I'm having the same thing with my '02 330. I thought it was a vacuum leak, so I took it to the dealer (still under warrenty). They put it on a machine and said there weren't any vacuum leaks. I am thinking it is an air leak in the air box somewhere, but my Dinan S package should be in this week, so I'm not worried about it...for now.

If your problem is the same as mine, I doubt that the Dinan intake will make a difference. The hose that I had a problem with would not be replace with an aftermarket intake
