I have a 2002 325 with 108k miles. I am the original owner. I have never had trouble with the car until now.
The engine intermittently dies at freeway speeds with no warning. Each time it happens, I pull over and the car always restarts as if nothing ever happened. The Service engine light goes out immedately upon restart.
The engine feels as if it is running out of gas.
The dealer tells me the throttlebody is sticking and the engine harness for the mass air meter needs to be replaced. The dealer wants $620 for the throttle body and $389 for a harness and 6 hours labor installation. The quote comes to $1700.
Am I getting screwed?

The stealership is never cheap. Your best bet is to look online for some quality parts and then take them to a good certified BMW/Euro shop and have them do it. Labor would be about half the price.

Actually first take it to a BMW/Euro shop. Their diagnoses may be correct as far as symptoms but I would want a shop to check out if it is anythign else first.

Is it a full "power off"? Like no lights or anything? Could be your ignition switch. I have heard of this happening if you have a heavy set of keys.
