I called my dealership earlier today to see if they had Power Steering fluid for my car. I later drove over to purchase it and the guy handed me Transmission Fluid. I didn't realise it until I got home.

Granted I don't know that much about what goes in your engine, am I wrong in thinking this guy was a total bonehead for handing me the wrong stuff? Now I have to go return it and what not... GAH.

According to Bentley pwer steering uses Dexron or Dexron II ATF. Later versions would also be ok.

Your dealer just charged you $6 for a $3 bottle of ATF you could have gotten at WalMart for $2. Unless it was Redline brand. Then it would have cost more and you couldn't have gotten it at WalMart.

If your boot is leaking you have a seal gone in your steering rack. I replaced a rack in my e30, rebuilt for about $300.00. I did the labor. It is good that you removed the power steering belt as you do not want to run the pump dry.

Power Steering fluid is generally ATF, Dextron II being the GM version. My 750iL uses a special fluid and not ATF. Any car with the self-leveling system uses a special fluid and you do NOT want to use ATF in them.

Eh, yeah now I feel stupid, they gave me the right stuff.

I went back there to double-check and it ended up being the right one to use...

...and I got a nice new keychain from them too. Haha...

I replaced my rack about a month ago, did all the labor myself. I faught the "knuckle" that attaches the steering wheel to the rack for hours. It is not too hard of a job. I paid about $500 for the rack, control arms, and ball joints.

Goog luck.
