Guys, I'm trying to put on my snows and one of my wheels won't come off. I tried whacking it a few times with a rubber mallet, but nothing. Anyone have any tricks??
So you removed the lug nuts and tried pulling the wheel off but it won't come off? You should be able to wiggle the wheel outta there (of course don't wiggle too much in case the wiggling causes the jack to fall!).
Back off each of the lug bolts a couple of turns to unseat the shoulder of the lug bolt. Leave the bolts backed off and lower the jack to put the full weight back on the wheel. This breaks the bond between the wheel and the rotor. Since the bolts aren't seated, there is just enough play for the wheel to become unstuck, but since the bolts are still in the wheel does not fall off.
Sit down on the ground in front of the tire, kick the tire on the sidewall towards the bottom of the tire.. (keep a sharp eye on the top, cause it will fall in your lap)... don't be scared, kick it hard.... HERCULES, HERCULES, HERCULES...
yea when the wheel gets stuck, i've seen guys at the tire shop face away from the wheel in question and kick the bottom part of the wheel w/ a reverse kick? (does that make sense?) so when you hit the tire, you make a 90 degree angle w/ the leg.
Thanks guys for all the advice. I was having a problem with floor jack so I was using the factory spare tire jack, so I didn't want to kick it too hard. But I ended up pouring hot water on the hub, and with a few more pulls of the wheel, it did come off.
