I have an 1988 325is. Lately I've been getting a service engine light coming on for a few seconds (20) or so. The car doesnt seem to have as much power as it used to it seems like its hessitating while I accelerate. The idle is steady must of the time and the car wont stall. Any ideas of where should I start looking at?

vacuum leak(?)........ check the AFM first, just take it off the air box and stick your finger in there and see if it moves. if it doesnt, you have a problem that can usually be fixed with a few squirts of WD40. if it does move, check for vacuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner on the vacuum hoses, if the idle goes up when you spray on a certain location, you have a leak.

When was the last time you checked the spark plugs? I had a very similar problem and found the plugs were worn. Also check the air filter. Could be a dirty fuel filter as well.

It's usually the simple stuff that'll get ya.

Thanks for the input, I'll check those once I figure out why it wont start. I think the problem might be (who knows) a fuel delivery problem since I dont hear the pump anymore when switch in the On position. It could be the relay or the pump. I'll troubleshoot both. Thanks again

i dont think you should be able to hear the pump when you have the key on, only when the car is running. you can take out the fuel pump relay and jump 2 terminals where it plugs into(im not sure which ones, check the bently manual) and then test for voltage at the pump.

Thanks for the good information, I was'nt sure if the pump was suppossed to run when switch is moved to on position.

What step am I missing,

1. Jumped relay (Fuel pump)= Pump runs
2. Jumped other 2 wires with a light, coming from main relay while crankin= main relay works

According to the Bentley by doing this two tests both the main and the pump relay are working, so why it wont start (yes it has fuel :) )
