I own a 2000 323i and recently every so often (maybe 1 time per day) when i chift to 3rd gear, the gear will instantainiously throw the stick out of gear as soon as i let off the clutch causing the gear to grind, like it would if you didnt know how to drive a stick.

I dont know much about the internals of the car (which is why i wanted to be a member of these boards) and it just seems to me that some teeth are missing? causing to stick to return to neutral and out of 3rd. If i keep my hand on it and apply pressure, itll click and go into 3rd and stay there for good, but i have to apply pressure not everytime i move into 3rd just incase it decides to toss me out of that gear.

Any ideas what it could be? and how much a job like that could cost?

Im in the process of going through and fixing anything and everything wrong with the car. its at 120,000 miles. Hard miles and maybe a little to abusing. Its paid off soon, so i can dump cash into it then and wanna restore it entirely.

Thanks for any help you can give me :)

did you buy the car new? if not, do you know its history, or did anyone learn to drive a manual in it? could possibly need an rebuild, not typical of a manual tranny tho, 9 times out of 10 it will live the life of the car (other than the clutch).

Its a manual stick shift, bought her brand new in 2000 and yea, i put a lot of hard miles on her. No doubt she took more abuse than shes showing. I actually am a convinced individual when it comes to BMW building cars that take a licking and keep on ticking.

Anyways, all i have been doing for the last 2 years is driving to work, going shopping for food, etc. no more screwing around, and i wanna undo most of the damage ive done. I think a tooth is missing or something. It just started doing out of the blue (meaning i was in the middle of speeding or screwing around) just driving to work and 3rd threw me back out and grinded out that horrible sound. ever since then, itll happen about 10% of the time when i drive it. either up shifting or down shifting. does it on both.

any ideas what its gonna cost to have this taken apart and looked at if its the tranny ?
