Hello, I am looking at buying a 1996 318i 5spd with 96000 miles on it. In looking at the car and driving it around, I have noticed a very distinquishable High Frequency whining when the motor revs above 2500 RPM. It seems to go down a bit after 3500. I thought it might be initially coming from the radio, but I was able to rule that out. It happens whether or not the call is idling or moving.
Any ideas about what this might be before I take it into a mechanic??

All pretty good places to start looking, and more than likely the alt. bearing.
