Hissing sound/acceleration

When I'm cruising along or idling, there is a hissing sound. But when I accelerate, it's gone. Any ideas what's up?

Where is it coming from? I assume under the hood? Could be air intake air flow, especially if you have modified the air intake.

Actually, it's not coming from under the hood. In fact, when the hood is up you can't hear it outside. It's coming from somewhere under the steering wheel

UPDATE: Just as I was getting ready to call a shop tonight to have them look at it, the service engine soon light came on. Hopefully nothing serious.
