Hissing sound from dash?

I recently test drove an '01 325xi that was for sale at a local Nissan dealer. Overall it was in pretty good shape (66000 kms on it) but as I was driving, I noticed a hissing sound coming from the left side of the dashboard. I couldn't tell exactly where the noise was coming from, but it stayed even after turning off the climate control and stereo. It almost sounded like a speaker when you turn up a stereo with no source, but when I turned the car off it went away gradually, so I'm pretty sure it was the sound of moving air from a fan or something. It was pretty annoying actually. The sales guy said this was normal, but he didn't seem to know much about BMWs to start with, and I've never noticed this when test driving other 325's. I'm not buying the car, but I wanted to see if anyone on here had any ideas as to what would cause such a hissing sound and to make sure it's NOT normal. Thanks,

Delroy

I'm looking for a pre-owned BMW, ideally a CPO. I'm sure lots of people on this board have bought their car used from a private seller or another dealer though. Does that make them cheap? The local BMW dealers don't have any pre-owned at the moment with the options I want. If a local non-BMW dealer has one that was traded in (I also wonder why, but it does happen) what's the harm in looking? You make it sound like I'm going around to all the Nissan dealers asking "Hey, you got any BMWs for sale?".
That's not the issue I posted my message for though, so allow me to clarify: I'm just looking for some comments about the hissing sound, you know, like if it's a common problem, easy to fix, etc.

I haven't heard any hissing noise from my dash on the '04 330cic. However, in the '94 325i a fan in the dash runs for a few seconds after the iginition is turned off. Supposedly this is the fan that draws air across the climate control temperature sensor, so I have read. Don't know if the newer cars have this?

In most cars (don't know for certain about BMWs) the divert valves, etc. for the A/C vents in the car are moved by vacuum. If one of those lines is off or cracked, you would hear a hissing sound, this I know from experience!
