I hit a gigantic piece of steel on the way to work today. It was about 4” square and about 3’ long. It looks like it cleared the body but what a hell of a noise and thud when the front right wheel hit it at 75 mph(the speed limit)

There was nothing I could do, it was just there and I did not have the time or space to react when I saw the car in front of me hit it. I can’t imagine that there is no damage but the car feels fine? We are so busy at work today that we don’t even have a free lift to just look at it with the need to get all of the customer cars and equipment out before the 4-day holiday.

I guess I will get it to the dealership and see how much this is going to cost me. I am sure they will hit me for $1,500.00 minimum for tire and wheel. The tire is not flat but that impact on such low profile tires is not good for sure. [?|]

"I knew I'd get a ticket driving a red car."

Hitting an object like that (at 75 mph) is like gettin' a [nutkick]...

You must have been [driving2] on that wacky I-215.

I didn't know they changed the speed limit to 75 mph...

Bryan330i: "Gee officer, I THOUGHT (???) the speed limit was 75..."

NHP Trooper: "No problem, young man... Sign here $$$."

Bryan330i: (driving off into the desert sunset) [bigcry] .

It was on I-15 south of 215 but I think you are right, it is the 65 zone [:I] the 75 is further south.

Officer: And by the way you have no front plate, $250.00 more.

Bryan: Is it true, no front plate can get you a ticket?

Officer: [:D] Big fines!

Bryan: Getting a Hyundai. [fake]

definately check it out asap. you could have sliced the tire or damaged suspension or steering components .

sometimes you don't have time to swerve or react fast enough when the car in front runs it over . They usually run something over and then kick it up right about eye level and all you can do is squeeze and clench!!!hope it turns out alright for you ..sounds like you work at a auto shop ..

on another note , there was an incident that occured recently here in hawaii involving cars and motorcycles.. A empty refrigerator box fell of a truck ( out by waianae , west side of island ) the car behind slammed on brakes , the lady and her daughter behind her swerved left went thru the grass median . she ended up in the opposite lane just as a squad of motorcycle cops was coming up . the cops all wiped out , one hitting the car and killing himself and the daughter of the car . I think two cops were seriously hurt . a couple of bikes skidded over to the bushes and ignited a brush fire . The rider was pulled out unconscious by another cop....
very sad . and all because of a cardboard box..I'm pretty sure I would 've just plowed thru it while bracking slowly of course..

Wow, things falling off trucks car be very dangerous. If this piece of steel has hit a car when it fell off, say just hit the front bumper or front hood, it would have totaled the car and who knows how many people may have been injured of worse.

Actually, I work in a fleet services company and we handle commercial accounts and some race car stuff and some heavy equipment stuff. But I have little mechanical knowledge myself, but I do pick things up here and there. We have a couple of customers that maintain what I would call serious amateur race cars with like $10-15,000.00 engines built purely for racing.

Unfortunately since Autonation bought the two local BMW dealerships I cant get discounts anymore. So I get to go pay full price[:(]

Just as a sidebar, I bought a tire and wheel hazard insurance policy from my dealer when I bought my car. Having the low profile tires I thought it a good idea. It cost $300 and covers me for 4 yrs, 50k miles for any tire or wheel road hazard damage (potholes, nails, STEEL BARS, etc.). My wheels cost $640 each (no idea what a tire costs) from BMW so I thought it was a good investment. Nailing a steel bar in the road would be covered.

This of course does not help you in the least.

Sorry about your mishap, maybe you will get lucky as you don't "feel" any problem.

Sorry to hear Bryan. If it makes you feel any better I hit part of a truck tire going 110mph in AZ. Thank god I had the front end cover on the car since that was the only thing damaged.

Sometimes its better to take the hit rather than swerving and potentially loosing control of the car.

Front plate issue...

Unfortunately Nevada requires a front plate and it is citable...

Normally you wont get bothered.

When I was on the Corvette Forum most of the 'Vette owners did not attach a front plate

and again, had no problem...

In law enforcement it's considered a 'chicken-$**t' citation but, it's legal 'probable cause'

to make a stop if an officer suspects (for example) a DUI driver...

Hey Bryan,

If you get over to D BMW they have the '04 ZHP I was offered in the Gray/Lt. Gray leather interior. I turned it down because I wanted the Alcan. int. If you see it there let me know what you think of it, being a new option for '04 on the ZHP...

My sales assoc. there is a Korean guy named Jin... He's the one bringing over my '04 ZHP from Cali. He's been great to work with and feel free to say you know me, Bill H. from
Johnston Atoll...[thumb]
