HOW much for an Alternator???

$425 for a new alternator for my 02 325CI??

Is that right? Jeez... its outta warranty, and if you include tax + labor, it comes out to a nice $718.03

For a freakin' alternator? Ouch.

Do I have an alternative? I've installed alternators in my older cars before...

That must be dealer price? Pelican Parts carries an alternator for your car for less than $220.00 I would not pay stealer price for it.

I have found a few cheaper options, but I do not know what amperage my alternator is.

I have found 80, 120, & 140 amp alternators.

The BMW place is supposed to call me back with that info, but I'm sure I'm a low priority now.

If I just took my car and replaced the alt. myself, (which I'm really thinking of doing), I still have to pay the $87.50 'diagnostic' fee.

The amps should be on the alt, if not check your manual. even if you pay them the diagnostic fee than but the alt elsewhere and install it yourself your money ahead.

Purchased the 120 amp alternator online for $178. Paid an extra $26 for overnight delivery. There is a $72 core charge that I should get back.

I think they waive the diagnostic fee if they do the work.
So, its only going to be $233 to the shop.

Therefore I've saved $260 by buying an refurbished alt.

I could save another $150 by doing it myself, but for that little, I guess I'll let an expert deal with that uni-belt.

They will not (of course) warranty the alt, but will the work. The place I am buying from will warranty the alt. for one year.

I should be back on the road by Wednesday. [driving2]
