Just got my 2001 BMW 325i w/ premium and sports packages...I absolutey love it! I do have a question for anyone that can lend me some insight into it. I want my bimmer to flash it's lights and make a sound when I lock and unlock the doors using the remote entry (I think this is called the visual entry option). Can I get this turned on by any BMW dealer? If so, about how much would it cost? Thanks to everyone that replied to my last post...hopefully I'll get the same response to this one.

I cannot speak for a 2001, however I can for a 2004. I believe the same applies for an '01 tho.

First, it is not related to the premium package.

There has already been some discussion about this. This is what I remember. There are 2 routines in the modules that control the lights and alarm. One is the "lights routine", the other is the "alarm routine". They are exclusive. So you can have your lights programmed to respond when locking/unlocking, including a blinking clown nose. If you have the alarm components installed (siren, motion sensor, tilt sensor) you can then have the "alarm routine" enabled, which will give you sound as well (double chirp on open, single chirp on close). Or you can have all cues disabled for stealth. Or just partly enabled.

I do not have the alarm, but I do have the lights enabled. The car came this way when I picked it up. I don't know the cost of having it enabled, but I think the price varies from free to $50 and higher, depending on your dealership.

It is something that only the dealers can program BTW.

blinking clown nose?

Why is it BMW factories alarms in some cars and doesn't in others (the majority) - if you compare it to their American counterparts a "mild" security system comes standard in pretty much the majority of the cars/trucks.

I do understand the fact that some people would prefer to have a good alarm installed then none at all.

i went to my dealer a few days ago and made an appointment to have a 'visual entry' enabled. because my car is still under warranty it's free of charge. Even though from what i've read it takes about two minutes to do (plug into their computer.. obd?) they want to have the car for the whole day o_0
