Hi Everyone

First visit to this site - very impressive!!

Hoping someone can help me out here.

I have a 2002 320d SE with 75k miles to date.

Recently starting hearing a rubbing/wearing noise coming from rear at aroun 20-30 mph.

Noise can't be heard all the time but can be quite loud on certain road surfaces - can still be heard when car out of gear.

phoned local BMW specialist who says it sounds like a "Hub Bearing" which he tells me is a common problem on these cars.

Is this true and how much can I expect to pay to get this fixed?

Also - pads warning light came on yesterday - how much for this from an independant - don't want to use local BMW garage ...much too expensive!!

Cheers

Well by hub bearing I would thing a wheel bearing. Get your rear wheels off the ground and see if there's any play in them. I would think that would point ot a wheel bearing.

You can do your brake pads for FAR less money than an independent shop will charge.

Sounds similar to a noise I had up front. Turned out it was my tires. I am not sure how someone can diagnose a problem like wheel bearings over the phone.

[thumb] Hey dudes and dudettes, I had a simular problem at about 80,000 miles and it turned out my rear wheel bearings on the drivers side were shot. I corner like nobodies business... I had to have my bearing replaced/repacked. Guess what, the grinding sound coming from my the rear of my bimmer stopped. I originally thought it was the brake rotors or pads but I had just replaced my rotors and pads at 75,000. That's my two and a half cents for what its worth...

[thumb] If you have a shop and the correct tools it can be done in a couple of hours. The most difficult portion is the pressing portion. Good luck and Happy Motoring...
