I purchased a 1999 328i in June of 03 cars been great to drive. Just recently I notice a Humming noise coming from the car my mechanic says it's the tires I have. The car came with 18"rims, tires are 235/40r18 made by Nankang Ultra Sport NSII series. The tires are wearing fine just want to find out if anybody has had similar problems with noise factor? or if they may have other theory on noise
problem.

thanks

Wow, you got some majorly nasty tires. My friend had them on his Prelude for a while and they were the worst tires by far than I've ever driven on. No offence, just stating a fact based on some hairy and funny experience.

Humming could very well be from the tires. Actually, no matter what tires you have, you will have some type of humming noise. The more aggressive the pattern, the louder they will be.

Any other noises besides that? If not, you're probably fine.

run the palm of your hand over the tire tread, does it feel feathered or cupped?
if so then it is probubly the tires. If so, it is usually from not rotating them is required.
Try rotating your tires, if th enoise goes from the front to the rear or visa versa then it is the tires, if it stays in the same place it could be somthign else.

Does the noise change or get louder with speed? or is it always the same?
If you can rule the tires out, then start with the wheel bearing and work your way in.
