Hydraulic Jack Question

This is probably a dumb question, but I bought a Craftsman hydraulic jack and it's not lifting. I opened up the oil fill plug and don't see any oil. The documentation is not real clear on this, but I have the feeling I should see oil and I'm thinking this may be the problem---it just seems strange to have this problem with a brand new jack. Just wondering if someone has some experience with this or any thoughts.

Thanks.

P.S. Yes, the valve was closed when I tried using the lift.

It should use hydraulic fuild. Mine works by tuning the handle clockwise to set the lift position and counterclockwise to lower. The more you turn it counterclockwise the faster it lowers.

This may be a stupid suggestion but can't you just call Sears and ask them?
It's not a bad suggestion---in fact, that would be my fall-back plan---but to be honest, I trust the people on this board more than the average shmoe who works at Sears. Also, have you ever tried to get a hold of someone at Sears who has at least half a brain? (Disclaimer: No offense to anyone here who works at Sears or has friends or relatives who work at Sears. It's just that I've had some pretty negative experiences with them in the past...)
