hypothetical nav sys question

Ok. I love my car. I only wish it had the nav system in it. I know I have read lots of posts outlining the fact that you can't get a factory nav system installed after it leaves the factory... usually.

I was wondering if I could find a wrecked Bimmer and do a little surgery to 'harvest some organs'.

I am also wondering if a 2002 Nav system will fit into a 2001 car? I am not crazy about the little view window the stock 01 Bimmer Nav sys had. I want the larger window.

Anyone heard of this type of Frankensteinien experiments going on? Anyone have any theories to if this would work or not?

Any input is appreciated.

you could get the screen to fit with some work, but there are many things that bmw put in at the factory (besides the screen) that are needed for the system to work, it would be really hard just to identify what you need out of a parts car. it really isnt worth it imo. if you really need a gps then you can buy an aftermarket one, otherwise its just for looks

Man, I am in the same boat. I have posted stuff before on this subject. I would love to have a oem nav unit in my 04 325ci as well. People will tell you that you cant do it, bwusa will say this as well, but know that it is possible because people have done it. However, it is NOT an easy do it yourself project. You need to find the units, and all the parts, including the wiring harness that is specific to each year. There are sites where you can find part numbers and instructions with pictures. In my opinion it is too difficult and too risky. If you mess up you could seriously damage your car. I know you could find some stuff on yahoo groups, and if you can find my past thread, there should be some links to some websites as well. anyway goodluck to you and if you end up being sucessful, keep us posted and help me wiht mine! haha. Alright man...peace.

Thanks for the advice. I live in Ontario so west coast is going to be a bit of a drive. I know that it isn't as simple as installing a new stereo.

I just wondered if anyone has heard it done. I can imagine there is a lot of spaghetti behind my AC and Radio now... Just testing the waters.

thanks guys

I have called west coast customs, they seem pretty good. If I can find the part numbers for the 04 nav system ( I think its the mark III navigation computer) and all the necessary parts, wiring harness etc. Im gonna take it to west coast. They quoted me 500 to 900 depending on the time it would take for install. If anyone knows where I could get part numbers anf or the parts themselves I would really appreciate it!!!
