I cant get a straight answer...

I called Best buy today and told them my situation , I have a 99 bmw with the wire for a cd changer already in it. So I asked if there is anyway to put a different cd changer such as a Kenwood or Sony instead... He said theres no way at all that I can do that... Id have to put in a new deck and this and that...... But Ive been reading in these forums that there are adaptors that allow other cd changers to be hooked up to Bmw decks.. Does anyone by any chance know...??? thanks

Dude that guy was full of shit. If your Bimmer is pre-wired for a CD-changer, all you have to do is take it to Best Buy and pick out any CD changer. They will install it for free and it will work perfectly fine with your stock head unit and speakers. I know this for a fact.

how is this a fact? unless best buy carries all the special adaptors as well. CD changers aren't just plug and play unless the head unit is from the same company.

Because I know people with 3-series who have purhcased CD changers from Best Buy for like $400 and get it installed, rather than paying $900+ for the BMW CD changer. Even when you walk into the Best Buy audio department, they have the signs explaining how it all works. They guarantee compatibility for all cars.

maybe the new cars are different
but in my car, there are 2 head units that came
stock - pioneer and alpine. now both companies
have cd changers, and they won't work with the
other's company. try a different best buy maybe?

AAHAHHA Mr. Exclusive u kill me... lol... but ya thats what he told me straight up.... He told me that if i want to have a cd changer I have to get the BMW one or replace everything in the car.... Like that sounded kinda stupid to me.....I was looking on the net and they have adaptors that you can use so that you can have kenwood or alpine cd changers in the car so I guess thats what Im gonna end up doing. I think best buys gotta double check who they got working there.....

BMW wants $900+ for the cd changer? Jeez that's insane! Good thing I never asked about the price, I woulda so laughed out loud. Honda wanted $400 or so for their stupid changer back a few years ago. They prolly charge more now instead of less and blame it on inflation or something.

Check out Pacific BMW- they have the stock Alpine CD Changer for $392.99. Their # is (800) 909-PARTS. If you go through Roundel magazine (if you are a CCA member) there are great deals on original parts- forget paying $900+.

unless u buy a new oem one from the dealer, most of the units u see on the after-market for under $500 are typically refurbs. the laser lens unit on the oem's are designed to only last for about 3-5 years. and, most owners don't realize u can just change out that part and typically change the entire unit out- hence the abundant refurb stock floating around. i've changed my lens mechanism 2x's already.

You can use any CD Changer but it will require an FM modulator to get sound to your stock system. The down side is that it will degrade the sound quality.

Best way is to replace the head unit when you get the new changer. This way is more compatible.

Like many have stated before, if your system is prewired, you can get and OEM CD Changer from www.pacificbmw.com for about $400. The installation is super easy and will take about 30 minutes to do.

hello everyone

I own a bmw, from 1996 to 2003 are almost the same and have very similar audio systems with the diference of dsp,or navigation systems or xm

but the cd changer is the same

my first cd changer for my 1999 bmw was a pioneer with a soundgate interface
bad problems there i lost am, my display was flashing and 2 weeks later i lost the tail lights something on the IP data buss of the vehicle changer was controll from the bmw radio NOT FM MODULATOR

SECOND CD CHANGER
was a sony cd changer 6 disc with a pie interface order from autotoy works good
controll from the bmw radio no problems a little to slow to change disc but it is normal with sony cd work for 2 years i sold that on ebay because i have to many MP3

alot of people told me bmw ? mp3 ? not posible LOL so now i have a new changer ALPINE MP3 CHANGER yes it works with the bmw radio i see all the track numbers on the radio and i have over 150 songs per disc
the interface is from alpine 1 from pie and the alpine cd changer i love this unit i got the unit from OEMAUTOSOUND

so yes alpine pioneer sony work with bmw also a usa spec cd changer but i never try that one looks alpine to me
