I hit a retread.

It was foggy this morning as I was driving into work on the Interstate (I have a 40 mile commute each way with zero no traffic). I almost was able to avoid it, but it came up too fast in the fog (I was going 80- 85 in no traffic in a 70 mph rural north Georgia run of I-75) and I couldn't completely miss it . When I got to the office, I surveyed the damage (it was still pretty dark). I noticed a big black mark on the front around the front left fog light and a black skid mark along the "ground effects" ( I have an '02 300i sport). When I got home it cleaned up nicely with the exception of a broken round insert around the fog light. The light works fine and appears to still be pointing correctly, but the round insert is completely missing.
When I hit a retread a couple of year ago in my five year old Honda, I laughed. It pissed me off in my BMW.

You know how sometimes on the side of the road you see pieces of big truck tires? It's because they take old tires and retread them, and the tread sometimes falls off. Thats partly the reason why those trucks have so many wheels (and yes I know it's also to hold the heavy loads), so if a tire or two blows its no big deal.

Basically picture the tready part on the road...thats what he hit.

that sucks, but i'm glad you drove away w/ minimal damage. if you hit anything going at highway speeds, it'll suck..

i often wondered what would happen, but i'm glad i never found out.
