I have a manual 323 Ci and i need to squeeze as much hp and torque out of it as possible for not a lot of money. Anyone know of any not too expencive upgrades i can put in it to get more power out.

That's not possible (getting a power for cheap). get a chip for $250 and thats the only thing you can do for cheap...really. Otherwise you're looking at a REAL cold air intake setup (easiliy $250 for a good one), headers, $800, etc.

There are no cheap mods that will provide a significant power increase.

A 'chip' (actually a software download on your car) is going to do little more than raise the rev limit and eliminate the top speed governor.

The intake isn't going to do much either, perhaps 5 hp.

Best bang for the buck is to put your car on the bottle.

Follow the rule of thumb: start with cold air intake, exhaust, and chip. You can get a nice cold air intake and exhaust off eBay for cheap. I remember when I had my Jetta, I purchased a $30 cold air intake off eBay and it was a replica of the Neuspeed cold air intake (which is $200), the only difference was that it didn't come with installation intsructions.

When you buy aftermarket products, these companies have an insane profit margin. If you are looking for cheap and easy horsepower, you can get a cold air intake and exhaust system off eBay for a really great deal.

CAI and chip combined will result in the most noticeable power increase.
Yup, follow this up with a real Cat-back aftermarket exhaust to free up the emmisions, it's the cheapest 'bolt'on' stuff you can do. (UUC or RE come to mind)

There are things you can do that don't give you actual hp or torque that will 'speed' you up some too.

Differential change to a taller ratio
lightweight flywheel

The mod bug has bitten I see.. [:)]

What about a wing? Isn't a wing the one of the cheapest performance mods to go faster? From what I see around my area sometimes, it MUST be true.

You haven't seen anything until you spend time around here - so many cars have huge wings on them around here that you'd think you were driving down an airport taxiway, not the interstate. [hah]

You guys haven't seen anything! [;)] Around here so many feel they have to compete with Boeing and create the ultimate land craft and with the HID's they put on them you would think they are using them for runway lights...... [?|] [bash]

Horsepower Gain
+ 24 @ 4500 RPM

Torque Gain
+ 28 @ 4500 RPM

New Rev Limit
5300 Rpm

Not bad for a 200 dollar chip, even if it is for an ETA!...I normally wouldn't trust those numbers, but it is a Conforti/Turner Motorsport product. I have been waiting all winter to put one in.

Please, if possible, go and make a dyno run before and after the the upgrade. Only that will really show you what the improvement is. Btw, did they tell you you have to upgrade your fuel, too?

A chip requires higher octane as the knocking becomes an issue when the timing gets changed.

Yeah, they recommend using 91 or better. I am planning on doing a before/after dyno run (and lucky for me, the dyno place is at a VW tuner so I don't have to feel too ashamed about seeing 90 hp at the wheels) [burnout]

good, w/o the higher octane it all would lead to counterproductive results. actually i am surprised that 91 is the minimum. i know a min requirement of 97-98.

anyway, i am really looking forward to get see the result. i am, as commonly known, not a believer in chip tuning. unless of course, the intake and exhaust get modified as well. that leads to my next question, are those parts stock at you car or did you already upgrade?

Well, he has an eta. The eta responds better to a chip than any BMW before or after. I have read that those gains with the eta are real - just don't expect anything that great with a more modern BMW.

The problem with chipping the M20 is that you MUST abide by the new octane requirements since the M20 doesn't have a knock sensor. I don't want to have to buy 93 octane gas for my BMW, so I haven't chipped my eta.
