I noticed a lot of you guys have "e"s I was just wonder why everyone had them. I know they are 2.7 versus the 2.5 of an i but I also know they put our about 130 while and i does about 160. Does the e have more untapped power or something? better to mod? or just easier to find? Just wonderin...

Basically, more affordable. The e has more torque and slightly better gas mileage, while the i has a slightly less displacement and a higher red line.

The real trick is to punch an i out to 2.7 liters.

When I was E30 searching I was really close to checking out a black 1987 325e 4door, but it just didn't get me going. I waited a bit longer til I found the red 325is, I'm quite happy now.[:D]

I got an e because it was alot cheaper than any i's I found in my area, and one of the main reasons I was buying the car was because I needed a fuel efficient car to drive that only needed 87 octane gas. I've been getting about 33 mpg on the highway, which isn't bad! Plus, this particular car was in better shape than pretty much everything else I had seen.

I like to autocross and I have driven an i and have an e. I like the way the e has more torque down low. It justs seems to pull harder too. and when I use it as a daily driver I get 25 mpg. I would like to put the i head on the e block and change the pistons. I think that woul make for quite a monster, has any one done that?

yeah a few guys i know have done it or something like it... i've been thinking about makin a 2.7i for a while now... basically what i'd do is pick up a 325i parts car to do an m20b25 swap into my car, then toss in the eta crankshaft, connecting rods & some different pistons (can't use the eta or the 'i' pistons... one creates super low compression, the other will contact the head)

The "i" is the best, mine is bored out to 2.9lt, but I think it is a waste of time rather go with an E36 M3 engine at 3.0 it can be bored out to 3.2 and in some cases 3.3, it just has more torque and more power. It does mess with the weight distribution a bit, but not very noticable for a daily driver. If u are gonna use it for racin or such, you can get some aluminium or one step better carbon fibre body panels.

I am an "i" sort of guy, i never really enjoyed low torque. I am not drving a truck and pulling a trailer, so waht do i need torque for? i like the zippy high torque curve "i"'s over the low torque curve "e"'s.

actually...torque is one of the most important specs of a car's engine. Try to think of it more this way:

Torque: The car's ability to accelerate at any given speed.
Horsepower: The car's ability to maintain that speed.

Without torque, you have no power. If you have no power, what's the point? Torque is often interchangable with the word 'power' to most engine mechanics and engineers. If you start looking into turbo and superchargers, especially where devcelopment and implementation is concerned, you'll find torque and power are the same thing...by definition.

what i meant is, what do i need low end torque for. i understand how torque works.

take a rotary engine, no low end torque, but a flat torque curve, the horse power is linear in that kind of engine, but the torque stays the same. i would rather have a setup like that. the same amount of torque at 2000 rpm as at 6000 rpm!!! WOWEEE!!

in an "e" engine the torque curve is high at lower RPM's but as soon as it gets into the higher rpms, it starts to get lower. So you don't got that extra pull at those higher RPM's. you actaully start to lose "power" the more rpms you go.

I am jsut saying, i really enjoy the high revs torque, the pull when you want to pass on the highway.

Ive got the best of both worlds, the 325. i love the low end torque, but where i have the most is between 3000 and 4000rpms, which is great for highway and little country roads.

Howdy Yall,

Hey, about this e or i thing, I have question.
Why is it that I have 325i exhuast on my 325e?
According to the Bently manual a 325e has a single pipe and a 325i has dual pipes.
