This might stir up some debate. Seems to me the consensus is that an i is a more fun car to drive and the xi takes away from a true rear wheel driving experience as well as cut down mileage. I have driven both in my test drives (325i, 330xi)and enjoyed the handling of the xi as well as if not better than the i. I live in Colorado so xi might not be a bad idea in my case. In experienced owners minds what do you think.

Personal preference should count the most. If you like the handling of the xi better, you're the final judge of your preference.

I have driven my 325i and 330cic competitively in autocross, and also my daughter's Audi Quattro A4 1.8T (close enough to the xi for this discussion). No question that they handle very differently. I prefer the rear wheel drive, however, my daughter prefers the Quattro for autocross. She beats my times when we use the Audi, I beat her times when we use the BMW.
