Idiot question

I know this might sound dumb, but i didnt get the manual with my car. The Yellow "CHECK" light is on in the dash....what are possibilities that could be the problem?

Literally anything to do with the engine or emissions controls. There are over 50 status codes for an E36 that cause the CHECK lite to come on.

Is it the check engine or check control. I'm not sure the '92 has a check control, but if so, it could be as simple as low washer fluid.

Its not the check engine lights, because thats red. I guess its what your saying, which is the check control.

I thought all the E36's (at least the 6cyl ones) would have at least the basic check control panel located just below the stereo infront of the gear lever.

If you have that check control panel, push the 'check' button and the display should state what the problem is. If you haven't, got a check control display panel then I would start off by checking that all of your lights work, coolant level isn't low and as mentioned low washer fluid level.
