No, the spark plugs can be changed without changing the coils. How many miles are on your car and could you be affected by the coil recall? Check this thread!
Hey jlfarley, I must agree with Big Daddy, I have never had my ignition coils changed on my bimmer, however I'm about 17,000 miles from my second ever spark plug change which is at 200,000 miles. Usually bimmer spark plugs are changed the first time at 100,000 miles. I've driven my car a fair amount of miles on two continents and through multiple states. My ignition coils have not been a source of trouble to this point in my journeys. Please take Big Daddy's advice and look at the year of your ride and determine if it falls in the window for any of the announced recalls. Happy Motoring...

Problems: poorer than usual acceleration. Also, I notice when I take my foot off the brake, the car won't automatically go forward as much as it used to
