A while back i took my '89 325i sedan in to the shop because it kept overheating. Turns out it was a bend hose and ended up replacing the hoses and then i needed a new drive shaft as well, I love my car, the repais cost more than i paid for the car. But lately it has started over heating again, I ordered myself a new fan clutch and a bottle of redline water wetter, cuz everyone says its the best and keeps temps down. Im hoping that this fixes the problem for the overheating. I drive my car for about 7 minutes and the temps are already in the red, then when i pull up to a stop light the idle is extremely rough ranging from 500 rpm all the way to 2000 rpm. I give her some gas while its down in the 500 hoping she doesnt die but nothing happens and has already died on my several times while in traffic, *kinda embarassing* maybe someone knows something i dont, also i put the heater on full blast and no hot air. thanx any help would be great hopfully the fan clutch fixes the problem

What about the thermostat? Is your waterpump working? It's not good to keep driving to the point where your car stalls from overheating.

It sounds like you may have a blown head gasket. Do you have any coolant/water in your oil, or is your water/coolant oily? It may be to that you have coolant/water leaking in to a combustion chamber. Does the exhaust look steamy when the car is hot? Does the car still overheat at highway speeds? If it does you most likely have a blown head gasket. Have these things checked out and let us know.

That's what I was thinking too -- our minivan had the same problem and symptoms.

There isnt any oil in my coolant and the exhuast isnt steamy, my fan clutch should be coming late next week/early the week after. I hope this fixes the problem, I also need new brake pads, which do you guys recommend for daily/street use.

if you're sure it's not the headgasket, and the new fan clutch doesn't solve you're problem, i'm with tom on this one. i'd lean more towards the waterpump, but your thermostat may be stuck closed. mine was broken into two pieces and my car was so cold. it makes sense that it could have broken when it was shut and you may have no circulation of the coolant. i dunno, i'm sort of a car n00b, but it's something to check out.

Be careful man , heat and friction are the most damaging to your engine . Somethings wrong with your cooling system , no doubt . Don't drive it with the gauge in the red!!

i seriously doubt its your fan clutch because you said after 7 minutes of driving it, it was in the red. when your driving the fan is usually disengaged, so check your thermostat.

that's a good point, i didn't even think of that. but like i said, it's probably your thermostat. thermostats are pretty cheap and pretty easy to install. just make sure you drain as much of the cooling system as you can, or you'll have coolant everywhere when you take the throttle housing apart (i had first-hand experience with this). after you take off the housing, the thermostat just comes right out. replace the O-ring if you put a new thermostat in, and you'll be fine

i actually replaced my thermostat about 2 months ago so i seriously doubt that the thermostat is the problem. Im gonna flush the cooling system when i do all this and add my water wetter and install my new fan clutch. Last time my car was overheating it was because one of the hoses was bent and blocking the flow of the coolant, ill make sure to check that as well. Ill be sure to check the water pump also because anything is possible.

Sounds Like Your Heater-core Is Blown,(or Cloged) I Would Check The Floor Of Both Sides Of The Car, And See If There Wet, Another Thing You Might Wanna Try Is (dont Do This If You Dont Trust Yourself) On Firewall Where The Inlet And Outlet For The Coolant Is You Can Disconnect Them Both, Hook Up A Hose To One Of Them(to Drain), And Hook Up Another Hose(to Fill) On The Fill Side If You Put Air Preasure, Along With Water It Will Clean Out The Heater Core(get All That Old Debri Stuck In The Fins,, )dont Give It Too Much Preasure, You Might End Up Blowing Up The Heater Core, After That Hook Up The Hose's Again, And Make Sure You Bleed The System Really Well,, Also If Your Idle Is Bad You Might Wanna Disconnect The Idle Controll Valve And Clean It Out With Carb, Or Parts Cleaner Sometimes, Oil (from The Breather) Clogs Them Up,, I Would Try To Clean It Out Before, I Were To Replace It,, I Hope This Helps
