inexplicable check gas cap light (2004 300ci)

recently, my "check gas cap" light came on. so i went and checked to make sure the gas cap was on correctly and it was. got back in the car and the light was still on. so i turned the car off and then turned it back on and tada the check gas cap light was off. over the past week, i've had the same problem a few times. the cap is on fine and i've unscrewed it and screwed it back in a few times to check. still i get this weird problem.

i'm going to call BMW to make an appointment but i wanted to check if anyone else has had similiar electronic issues and, if they have, what was the solution? again, help is always appreciated. thanks

not to be stupid, but yes i'm a quite adept at putting the gas cap on. i haven't even had to refuelsince the problem started.

The gas cap light came on once after my first fillup a couple of weeks after I got the car. Removed and reinstalled making sure the cap clicked only once. Hasn't repeated in 14 months.

thats happened to mine as well....but i didnt put mine on correctly even tho i thought i did...the lady i spoke to at bmw told me i had to turn it until it clicks...doesnt matter how much i turn or how hard, if it doesnt click...its not on right....
