There will be a 1-7 series indeed...

The Even number series will be the Coupes, the Odd numbered series will be the 4 doors, or wagon/hatch models.

1 Series - 2 door hatch, 4 door wagon (not to be sold in the US reportedly.) [:(]
2 series - 2 door cabrio, 2 door coupe, M2
3 series - 4 door sedan
4 series - 2 door coupe, 2 door cabrio, M4
5 series - 4 door sedan, M5
6 series - 2 door coupe (2+2), M6
7 series - 4 door sedan (or iL for limo if you prefer) [:)]

So the M4 is replacing the M3? Thats too bad, have kind of grown to associate "M3" with performance, I dont think they should change the name of something this legendary :(

Well BMW dude - perhaps they will come out with an M3 (sedan) again sometime in the future! When they did the last time I realy perked up and wished for one but it didn't work out. I'm a family man and the M3 (or 3 coupe..to become 4) is just impracticle pr at least not ideal...which is why the ZHP sedan had such an apeal - an "almost M" as it were - with some comfort as well as some speed and superior handling...can't wait till July!

I wish the would bring back the 8, I've always loved that car. It reminds me of the original... M1.

(Even if it doesn't have the midmounted engine)

Ok, that's 3 times you've said that, unless you have some serious inside source that goes against everything BMW has shared with the public so far, speak up and prove it, because you're rejecting what BMW is sharing with the public already! The E90/E91 3/4 series is for real, check out the MULTITUDE of photos and posts about it at E46fanatics.Com(More E46 folks there with a bun up their arse about it then you'd imagine..). If you want proof of the M2, and BMW's 1/2 series, go buy Automobile May 2004, where it has nicely spread on it's cover; THE M2. With pages of detail on 48, 49, and 50.

Here's a word for word quote from page 50, where they discuss the engine sizes they are planning for all the M classes:

"One concern of BMW's North American product planners is the engine lineup(1/2 series). The choice, at least initially, will be limited to four-cylinder engines. The 2.0-liter sixteen-valve unit in the 220i makes 150hp, and a turbocharged 2.0 liter is said to be good for at least 200 horses. (It is unlikely we will see the 115-horsepower, 1.6 liter four that's fitted to be the 118i or a brace of diesel engines). An in-line six-cylinder is vital for the U.S. market, so expect to see either a 230i powered by BMW's familiar 3.0 liter in-line 6 or a turbocharged 2.5 liter six making 250hp in the 225i. The only globally available six-cylinder is likely to be reserved for sporty M1/M2. With a 500 hp 5.0 liter V-10 due to power the new M5/M6, and a 400hp 4.0 liter V8 about to set the next M3/M4 on fire, a 300 hp 3.0 liter six looks like a logical choice for the M1/M2. The same engine would enhance the appeal of the still pending Z2. Available transmissions are said to include conventional five- and six-speeders, a five speed automatic, and an ultraquick six speed sequential manual gearbox with paddle-shift actuation."

That's of this month, so what do you know different sir?

Since the other models seem to be getting engine upgrades, would it be possible to have more than 225 on a base 330Ci (or 4 series)?

When is this new line-up of cars due out (regarding the 4 series)?

I'd think so, but it depends, they squeeze alot out of those engines as is; They did squeeze out 14 more hp out of the same 2.5l engine from the 99-00 323 to the 01 and up 325i. 'Better compression' is the 'quick' extent of the difference. They probably could get a little more out of the 3.0, new technology and all.

I've seen posted that a 3.5l engine will accompany the 2.5 and 3.0 in the 3/4 series line, but we'll have to really wait and see. They could make all of them but, will they 'sell' it here, or not? (1 series may not make it to the US from the recent reports).

Summer/Fall of 2005 for the new 3 series, if they follow the normal BMW trend when releasing new bodies, they will do the coupe and cabrio in 2006 (So, 4 series and the new M4 in 2006?). The 2 series and M2 will be out Summer/Fall of 2005, the 1 series arrives in Europe and abroad this Fall. But maybe that was just previous factory constraints - I'd get a new 1 series today for my wife if they sold them here, and get myself a new 3 series too.. I can't wait to do some test driving..

Check this link out: Select the 1 series from the Car line-up. [:)]

Well the 3/4 would seem to be the way they're going. Since they did the 5/6 and now the 1/2, it's seems they are intent on 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 (8 coupe?) line-up. The numbers are becomeing less series' and more just digits (hard for people to keep up with).

Yet, they haven't spit the 3 yet. There's something to be said for the valuable band identification they have achieved with the simple number 3. It may be that they just want 3 to stand for sedan and touring...but part of the appeal to the series is the mighty M3.

Would an M4 command the same sort of instant brand identification that an M3 would? They didn't even come out with a M this time in the four door...so do they really want to walk away from all that marketing and recognition in people's minds? The top end kinda excites the journalists...buyers (hearing that M is on top) accept lesser gods in the 3 series line (even entry level engines) knowing they are part of some pedigree.

Who knows...we'll have to wait and see.

Hey Noodle I think they do still plan a M3, in fact the return of a M3 sedan. Check my quoted bit from May's Automobile up above, they did say M3/M4 and V8 w/ 400hp together. Same as they did the M5/M6 w/ the V10 500hp engine. There might be hope!

I would really dig having a real M5 sedan, I just don't think I'll be able to afford it soon.. A new M3 sedan however would make me a happy camper!

One reason they're calling the new coupe/cabrio a 4 series is that it's being developed with its own chasis, not just a 2 dr derivitive of the sedan.
Timetable given above agrees with what I've heard: sedan in '05, coupe/cabrio probably not until fall '06. I figure to keep my 04 330 (now awaiting transport!!!) until spring '07 and get a fresh 4 series for the summer. However, I don't think the M4 will be out until at least '07--they seem to delay the M (like the M5).
I have also heard that the cars come out in Europe 6 months before North America--so we're not really even close as no "official" pix have even been released by BMW, just "spy" stuff.
At the Chicago Auto Show this year, they even denied there was a new body style coming, just like they denied a new 5 last year.
