That sounds about right for price. I got several quotes in Baltimore for the service and they were all around there. My car is older so I just print out the services and take it to an independant, about half the cost.

However I would like to know where they get 7.5 quarts of full synth for $28.20.

7.5 QS Full Syn Euro
$28.20

The oil sounds about right from what the local dealership charges me for the oil (which I change myself).

You could have save $300 of labor by doing this stuff yourself. They popped one oil drain plug, and replaced a few filters....and I guess one light bulb. $300 in labor!?! Wow.

Yes, I don't see anything on the list where you can't do it yourself.

However, isn't Inspection #2 still considered as part of warranty/maintenance?
What year is your 330CI, TSilver?

I have a 2001

My warranty has been up, so I had to pay this one. In addition to this, they also inspected things such as radiator, brakes, clutch etc...

In addition to the oil change, thats what was the important part about this.

Also,

Does anyone know what the bulb socket flasher is? How is this different than the bulb?

Is the Bulb holder, inside your flasher assembly. I had to change a bulb once, and will have to change the bulb holder soon on the front passenger side. For some reason, the vibration caused a lot of buildup between the bulb and the bulb holder's electrical contact, which chewed up the the contact. This is an $8 part.

This is very typical to all dealer services.
The dealers have maintenance services which cost a lot of money. But, what they do is only inspect them.

I think with how much they cost us, they should just replace them.
Has any one ever ask to go ahead just replace what they plan inspect?
Perhaps it would cost a bit more than only inspection, and then if they find something they add/replace the parts and charge you again.

Because all those things that they inspect are bound to be replaced anyway soon or later(i.e. brakes, radiator fluid, break fluid, power streering fluid, etc.).
The goal of inspection to me is to replace what are almost worn out, not just to tell me they wear out. We all knew they wear out!

dcaron9999:

The bulb socket flasher is the holder you are saying then? And what is 8 dollar part, the bulb or the holder?

Interesting theory

Change engine oil and filter, differential fluid. Replace air and fuel filters. Check coolant and battery. Check and adjust brakes, check and adjust belt tension. Check steering parts and CV joints. Install and adjust tune up parts, calibrate fuel injection. Adjust valve clearance and Roadtest.
Air Filter 11.02
Oil Filter 9.40
Spark Plugs 84.60
5W/30 Oil 32.90
Trans fluid 5.94
Trans treatment 5.95
labor 320.00
Total 492.16

The belts have a self-tentioner. Unless it's broken and the belt is flying off the car, I'm not sure how it would be adjusted. Am I missing something here?

What is calibrate feul injection? Anybody heard of this? Valve clearance, too?

I hope they checked my timing belt. I hear when that sucker goes, it is very expensive to fix. The fact that I have a german car I can't imagine how much that would be.

Does anyone know what the bulb socket flasher is? Is this the blinker perhaps, and the bulb is just the regular light?

Your car does not have a timing belt - it has a timing chain. The M20 in the E30 had a belt - since then, the sixers have had chains. So, no worries!

I don't think you are missing anything - I was wondering that same thing myself. I don't see how you could adjust the tension on the belt when it has an automatic spring-loaded tensioner.

Never heard of "calibrating fuel injection" since the way old mechanical fuel injection system. Computerized fuel injection systems have no calibrations - that's the whole point of having the fuelie system controlled by a computer.

If you've read any of my previous posts, you'd know I don't have as much knowledge in cars let alone bimmers as most of you.

So what is the difference between a timing belt and a timing chain? And does anyone know the answer to my previous question.

The major difference between a timing belt and a timing chain are followings:

(1) Timing chain usually lasts for the life of the engine(vehicle). It rarelly requires replacements. Timing belt requires periodic replacements as per vehicle manufacture specification. Usually depends on the miles or years interval.

(2) Timing chain is noiser and timing belt is quieter.

Yes, you are correct that the damage can be heavy when a timing belt breaks. Depends on the speed and RPM when the belts breaks. High speed and high RPM translates into heavy damage.

Hence, the car becomes a 3 tons paper weight. [:p]
