I think so...

Hey,... I took a cluster out of an 89 3 series and put it in my 84 318i... (I'm not sure what model it came from, but I know it was an 89) It should work. As long as the TACH's are the same (I believe they are...) I am pretty darn sure it should work.

Hi.

the 318's have a 7k rpm tach and the 325/e has a 5k rpm tach. You can use a tach from a 325I since those have the 7k rpm tach. The "E" tach would probably work, but you would be hitting the needle about 5k rpm. So jsut make sure the tach you are looking at goes up to 7K rpm and you should be fine. Or if you want just get an aftermarket tach and wire it into your coil. Later

the tachs are exactly the same from what i understand. there is no timing.

a 325e redlines at 4500 or 5000rpm's right? and a 318i rredlines at 6500 RPM's .... if you put the 325e tach in 318i, the car would still redline at 6500, and the needle would move to where 6500 "should" show on a 325e tach, (if it had markings that went that high)

The marks from my understanding are only there for reference. So thats why i say you can just install the 325e cluster and replace the face of the tach with the 318i face, so the proper markings are there for the needle to line up in. What keeps the car from revving over 4500 or 5000, isn't the tach. its the schematics of the cars computer.

i just think that a tach is a tach. (atleast all aftermarket ones are like that) i am not sure if all stock ones are like that tho.

Thanks all. I miswrote, it is 325i with a 7k tach, and the 318i has a 7k tach as well. i just was concerned if the wiring harness are lined up the same way. Thanks all for your advice. definitely quicker advice on this board than on the other board i asked the same question,w here no one replied. regards.
