instument light on 2004

Has anyone with a 2004 3-series noticed that they can not completely turn off the dash instrument lights?

On my previous BMW the rotary dial that controlled the instrument lights allowed me to change the lights from completely turned off to very bright. My 2004 goes from very bright to only kind of low light.

I'm curious if this is a problem with my particular car or a new 'feature'.

My '03 is like that also so I assume that's normal. When I drive at night, I set it to the dimmest setting because it's less distracting.

My guess is BMW designed this feature to prevent a driver from turning off the lights completely for any reason, which is a good thing.

The problem is that even at the lowest light level is still brighter than I want.
