Intermittent ABS light on

My wife reports that her ABS light is going on and off intermittently. I have read other threads here about possibilities of:

1) ABS relay

2) ABS brain

3) ABS wheel/speed sensor(s)

Given that it's intermittent, is there one of the above that's more likely than others? What's the best way to determine what's the cause?

My gut feel is that it's the sensor(s). Is there a sensor at all 4 corners?

Thanks,
Neil

Yup 4 censors - one at each wheel. You could probably clean them yourself and see if that works - use a can of brake cleaner (aerosol).

I had the same problem and it turned out to be that one of the ABS sensors went bad. I got it replaced at the dealer and it wasn't expensive at all. I say get it fixed as soon as possible.

I'm with BMW of North America, LLC. I've passed this message on to a BMW NA Customer Relations Representative who will be in touch with you soon.

It was asked before but we will ask again, how are you going to do that without any information from the poster? If your really from BMW NA please provide a telephone number that you can be reached at, in your office, so that we can call and confirm your post! I attempted to e mail you and/or PM you but it appears you have opted out of all communication.

Perhaps they have records of dealer service on this problem, and will be contacting those who recently had such service performed on their vehicles as a followup, not efficient or even logical but it's probably the BMWNA employees "job".

Does not explain how they are going to contact our poster, what would they have that could link any service record to him, and what if he is a DIY'er? I have contacted BMW NA and they are looking into this. I will let our members know when I have received an answer.

I've wondered the same thing and have posted once or twice questioning if it's real. If you do a google search, the same SN shows up on a bunch of other forums with the same text. I can understand the posts with a "case number", but the posts like the one in this thread makes no sense. There's no name, vin, etc. tied to these accounts.

Yes I agree, BMW NA did tell me that they do read the fourms and they do post, however their posts should include an 800 number for the member to call, as they too confirmed that otherwise the post in pointless as they have no way to contact our members.

Yeah, it was a really short message compared to a typical BMWNA message. They usually end with a paragraph similar to this:

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused affected customers. If you have any questions, please contact your authorized BMW center, BMW NA Customer Relations, (800)-831-1117 or send us an email through our website at bmwusa.com.

Often times, there's a case number or smoething that makes it even more personal.

I guess the real question is, "Why would BMW NA Customer Relations give a crap about my having to clean the sensors on a 70k mile car (not that he knows that yet)?" FWIW, no one has contacted me and the light has stopped going on (or she's tired of complaining about it to me). [kick]

Is there an easy way to identify them if I decide to crawl under there? Do I have to remove them to clean them or just spray the cleaner on them?

Sorry if these questions seem stupid . . . I'm a newbie to the 3 series.

I'm with BMW of North America, LLC. We monitor this and other chat room sites to see what delights or concerns BMW owners. If we have special information to pass along, we will post to the board, but more often my colleagues and I will attempt to reach out to individual posters. In those cases where we can identify a poster from information in the post or prior experience, we arrange for one of our representatives to contact the poster directly. In any case, you can always reach us directly by calling 800-831-1117, Mo-Fr 9am-9pm EST, or email us at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

Wow! I'm impressed that BMW actually monitors these sites. I am a member of several Dodge truck sites and was a member of the biggest Ford site and never would a mfr dare chime into any post there - talk about opening themselves up to a proper flaming!

Anyway, the problem appears to have cured itself for now (I love it when that happens). Maybe a sensor got dirty and the rain cleaned it up. Who knows?

Eh I think it's good they do it, but they should be calling the customers every few months to make sure they are happy.

Guys you should be happy that BMW NA do monitor and able to comment and advise fellow BMW owners (they care!!!), the BMW over at my part of the world just dont give 2 cents worth what we owers think. They are here to con us in getting the car and then bleed us dry :(

Well BMW NA keep it up. :)
