Anyone out there had any luck with an ipod using the aux input that's in the glovebox?
Is there actually such a thing? and what's required as far as hooking up?

Would love to not use a fm adaptor.

Any replies would be appreciated.

I got an iPod as a gift over the holidays. I understand that it is fairly expensive to maintain because of a $250.00 charge to replace the battery, or as the company says, rebuild the iPod. Someone said it has been on TV over the last couple of weeks as “Apples dirty little secret” Anyone have input on this?

Bryan330i,

You can buy a replacement battery and install it yourself. The battery
is about $50 and they have instructions on how to do it. Hey, if we
can mod a BMW, we can mod an IPOD! [:D]

I copied this verbatim from the 2003 Original BMW Accesories Brochure (Page 39, if you must know. ).

D. Auxiliary Audio Input

Now you can connect virtually any audio device - MP3 player, portable CD or cassette player, and more - to your car radio. The audio connection is mounted securely in the glovebox of your 3 Series and has a 3.5mm stereo connector. Audio from the auxiliary input is selected using the "mode" button on your radio.

3 Series from 9/02-on, without navigation.
Part #: 82 11 0 149 389 Price: $39.95

3 Series from 9/02-on, with navigation.
Part #: 82 11 0 149 391 Price $39.95

Thanks for the information! I did not know you could buy the battery. I am not a mechanical whiz for sure but I think I may be able to take on the iPod battery. [:)]

There is the Blitzsafe alternative. Use the BMW/AUX DMX V.1 interface adapter for aux input only. Or BMW/ALP DMX V.1D to have aux + alpine CD changer. The install is easy, you just have to run some RCA cables into the car from the trunk for the aux part. I have mine routed so the RCAs come out inside the rear armrest, behind the leather flap. This is non-invasive and does not require taking the trim off or drilling and what not. It works pefect for my portable DVD player and would work for any audio device that you can connect RCA outputs to.

I just read on Blitzsafe's website that they are developing an ipod/BMW interface adapter that will allow control of the ipod from the steering wheel/radio controls. No ETA on the device but you may want to wait for it, sounds cool.

just for the record, those immature piece of shite brothers who started that ipodsdirtylittlesecret.com have no idea about electronics... their ipods stopped maintaining 100% charge capacity after 18 months... hello people, no matter what appliance your battery is in, a rechargable battery is only good for a certain number of cycles and on average lasts 1 1/2-2years... and apple replaces the battery for you for $99 or you can buy their $59 warranty plan or $49 DIY battery replacement... as you can see, not only am i a bmw fan but a total machead...
