The more I see inane questions and general foolishness I am convinced many answering on this board are "bored" and use this forum for self entertaining. Some probably do not even own a BMW. I can count on one hand the number of people that share measured opinions and advice based on experience.

cool ... and i also don't think posers ask questions about the amount of brake dust on their rims, "break-in" questions from the owners manual, or how to set their clock.

Are you saying that those of us that don't own BMWs shouldn't ask questions that may seem inane or foolish to those more familiar with BMW cars?

I don't own a BMW, but I come here, and may ask dumb questions in order to help me decide if I want to aquire one or not. Hopefully, I won't look too stupid in the process.

To Uncle Rusty...Feel free to participate on this board. I was a member long before I owned a BMW. I found it extremely helpful and the members to be very amicable. Everyone brings something to the board from personal knowledge or experience. Even people without BMW's. I think it would be foolish to miss out on someones contribution just because they dont own a BMW. Oh and by the way....did anyone ever answer that brake dust quetion? IF they did sorry, I issed that. Thats my BIGGEST problem. I got my 04 3 series coupe, 6 months ago and my rims still look black as night from all the brake dust (im assuming, cant figure what else it could be). Anyone have any suggestions ?

Thanks, pydo82 for the kind reply.

I imagine that there isn't a lot that can be done about the brake dust issue, but considering how much I like BMWs, I can live with it.

It's kind of interesting, the last time I was shopping for a new car, about 18 years ago, forums like this one weren't around. There is a lot of good information here for us posers!

I can answer your question.

If you look carefully at the front bumper, you will see two airducts leading to the wheels. Those are brake cooling ducts (M-cars have them blocked for some unknown reason). The air flows from the inside of the wheel well through the rim and out by the rocker panel. All the dirt and brake dust is thus picked up by the rims as they spin. Reason one.

Reason two: BMW uses extremely soft, dust-producing Jurid or Textar brake pads. They have a very good "initial bite" that we all like about BMW brakes - that instant grabbing power - and no squealing. But as a trade-off, they had to use a softer compound that generates lots of dust.

You have a choice to either get used to it and wash/wax the wheels often or swap the pads to some other type of a dustless pad (stay away from the "Green Stuff" ) and risk extra noise and rotor wear.

Hey, you have to learn somewhere. I'm 27 and buying a $60,000 car. I think no question is stupid in making sure I'm making the right decision. There's a lot of stuff I don't know about buying a car, and the more I know, the less stupid I look to the dealer, and the less they can take advantage of me. I finally got through to my salesperson and blew him away with the stuff that I learned on this site from asking stupid questions. From steptronic to shipping ... it's all here. I think people should post more, cause every little bit helps. I'm a member of another forum, crownvic.net (my last car was a 2003 LX Sport that was totalled), and those guys post a lot. Everyone is a friend there. I kinda wish this forum was more like that one. [???1] One each thread, there's one response, or two. Why not 10 or 20? We should be more of a community and help each other out more.

OK, I'll shut up now. [driving]

Cool, I did not know that, I wonder why?
We looked at both. M5 comes with the whole front grill blocked on the sides. We bought a 540i front kit, including the wheel well and air ducting to make the M5 channel the air properly. Internally the car is "pre-set" for the kit already.... [???1]

I believe in EU, the M5 comes with the ducts open. But for the US market I really don't know why they would block them.

M3 has one slot open and one closed. The open slot is only functional because the air intake has a snorkel attached to the duct. The other side is totally blocked. Again, you can buy a "euro" kit from the dealer to open them up. Indeed weird....[???1]
