Is My 2003 330ci Burning Oil ??

My car now has approx. 12000 miles. The computer now tells me that my FIRST oil change is due in 800 miles.
Today, after turning the engine off I noticed the oil light was on. I checked the oil and it was about 1 quart low !

The last time I topped it off was in November. This is the second time I have encountered this problem. (Oil Light) I know it is normal for this engine to burn a bit of oil in the first year...But this new development has me VERY concerned.

Any advice/comments ?

The engines can burn some oil in their first months of life. I don't know about a full quart....I'm assuming you're talking about your first 12,000 miles?

But after that...at least my 2.8 engine...hasn't been burning oil at all.

It is not uncommon for all engines to use some oil. The amount you said it used over the mileage driven does not call for alarm on your part. I suggest you check your oil level more frequently and top off as necessary, and don't worry about it, unless it gets to the point of 1 qt. per 500 miles or so. Then you would have something to be concerned about.

All inline BMW's burn oil. It's the nature of the engine that causes more oil to be circulated and gives more chances to actually be burnt.

Jnejman. If the oil level (NOT pressure) light comes on every 1,000 miles, then you probably have a leak somewhere. I know mine is the oil cooler line (which only has oil flow through it when the engine runs hard, like on a highway)

Actually I did propably about 4,000 miles before oil level dropped about .5 of quarter.
is it ok?
Yup, that's very normal. It's not bad at all and it will probably get better as time goes on.
