3 months ago my brother's girlfriend took her 2006 Mustang to a Jiffy Lube in Rancho Cucamonga (or maybe Upland) CA. They drained her oil, replaced the filter, but never put any new oil in. Needless to say, her engine burned up before she got home. She had the Mustang towed to the selling Ford dealer, and of course it was "her" fault, so no warranty was valid on the engine. Jiffy lube refused to pay for the new engine, and told her to sue them. Being a single mother, who needs a car for work and taking the baby to daycare, she just traded the Mustang in (lost over 12k dollars), and bought a new car. I will never go to Jiffy Lube. Thiefs!!!!

It is not just jiffy lube.
Last week I bought a beautiful 2000 328i with sport package, etc. etc.
I got it from a private owner who had service records, yada, yada.
Of course, me being me, first thing I did was buy new tires and new wheels (he had curb rashed the wheels pretty badly), then put in a K&N air filter and replace the spark plugs. Come to discovery that this 6-year-old car, with service records as long as your arm, HAD THE FACTORY ORIGINAL AIR FILTER IN IT, AND THE FACTORY ORIGINAL SPARK PLUGS IN IT! You would think that during all that service, SOMEBODY would have thought to replace these parts as a maintenance item! Goes to show, there is no substitute for a well lit, well set up garage, and some know-how yourself.

That investigation is especially bad cuz it's a 3 parter.

Part 1: discover Jiffy Lube rips off customers. The district manager of the region is directing this b/c it profits him. Incentives (pretty much forced) to employees to tack on charges or charge for stuff they don't have time to actually do. Lies when they corner him and claims he's not who they say he is. Jiffy Lube claims investigation will be done and better employee training will be done.

Part 2: Follow up to see if changes are made. Turns out, Jiffy Lube just trained their employees to better spot investigative reporters and rigged cars. Still ripping people off. District manager is still up to no good.

Part 3: Jiffy Lube claims changes were made, district manager supposedly fired, etc. I don't believe any of it.

This explains why all car shops don't want the customers watching them working on their cars. They always say that the insurance doesn't allow it.

While it is possible you would get hurt in there, I've never believe that this is the only reason.

I used to stand just outside the garage door as these places
changed my oil. It drove them nuts, but I didn't care.

I've done it as dealers too, but not for BMW.

BMW dealers seem to be very big on making sure they get top
marks on those customer surveys from BMW North America (and
BMW NA will call you 15 times until they finally reach you).

I'd guess BMW NA finding out about a dealer charging for work
not performed would go ballistic.
