Just crossed the break-in-time (2000 km), now what??

The user guide says "From a distance reading of 2000 km (approx. 1250 miles) onwards, engine and road speeds can be gradually increased".

But how gradual should the change be? Is it OK now to hit 5500 rpms every 5 minutes without shortening the engine life? Or would it be a safer bet to remain below 5000 rpm or so for another 2000 km? What's your take on this? Thanks in advance.

I believe you can drive any car, regardless of mileage up to the redline and at any speed as long as you do not hold the speed or RPM at one point for long periods of time. It is the "Ultimate Driving Machine", drive it!

1796cm3, 115HP-engine model E46 that's apparently not available in US.
No we don't have it in the US. 115hp, do you know how does that compair to the 185hp on the 325i. And what about price does the 316i sell for less.

It looks like the standard 2005 325i is equipped with 192PS, not 185PS.
So, the 325i is 67% more powerful than the 316i. That's quite a difference, I must admit. And according to German list prices, the 325i is 32% more expensive than the 316i. That figure should vary though (usually upwards), with different import duties in different countries.

due to different emission requirements, euro spec and us spec cars vary in hp. w/ US drivers usually getting shafted.. w/ 185 horses. on the flip side, we do get much cheaper gas, so take that you euros!! [:p] for instance, if i bought an e36 m3, i would've been freakin pissed. euro spec had 321 horses, vs "paltry" 240 for the ones over here.. e46 did close the gap quite a bit, 333, but iirc euro spec has 343? horses?

since the 1.6liter is a four banger, which no one in the states woudl dare put in their car, (iirc there were some 318 e36 hatches rolling around, but it was a hatch and a four banger, so low sales.) especially for the money they would have to throw down for the car. remember the i20 from infiniti? i thought so.. just doesnt' work in the states. but i'm sure there are some weight savings, and pretty big gas milage considerations.

harman1: i'm not really sure what you are asking for, answers seem pretty obvious, 325 will def cost more and will be faster off the line. dun have a clue about handling and such..

I called the dealer and they told me to keep it below 5500 rpm till 5000 km ( ~3125 miles), then I would be free to redline or drive at high revs for long periods. He even urged me to do a speed test on the highway. Hehe, what a service rep! [pray]

hehe can tell you that it will probably be 210 km/h....bad side of the story is while I was doing 210 in 316i I passed a police car (at night).....decided to keep driving since the police car was a silly underpowered opel astra doing 120 km/h. [pray] lucky it wasn't a fast mercedes or volvo...

210 km/h at night??? Whoa, that's scary! [headbang]
Once I got my old E36 316i to roll downhill at 205 km/h (~127 mph), but that was during daytime. [:I]
