Key Memory - does yours work?

My dealer can't get my 2 key fobs to work with the electric seats. As I understand it when you unlock the doors with the key fob the seats are to return to the preset position. I have tried 3 times with the dealer to fix this without luck.

1. When I picked up my 2003 330i the dealer told me that the fob did not need to be programed and as the computer would remember. That was wrong.

2. Brought my car in with only one key fob and the service guys said they needed both of the key fobs, also laughed at the sales guy in 1. above.

3. Brough my car in with both key fobs and the service guy could not make the memory work saying something about him needing new software. I asked if all of the 2003 cars sold at Bavaria in Edmonton, Alberta did not have their keys with memory. No answer.

What's up?

Once your seats are in the position you want are you locking the door with the set of keys that you want to remember that seat position? It may take a couple of lock-unlock cycles to remember that seat and mirror position. Mine does anyway.[rolleyes]

I'll have to check mine, i don't think it changes with the normal key i use (spare set works though). I usually haev to just hit the memory button.
Does anyone know if the keys work to close all the windows and sunroof when locking the doors? I can get it to open all of them when i unlock the doors but not to close them. I swear the dealer did it when i picked up my car...

I think I see what may be the problem here. SEAT memory and KEY memory are not related. Seat memory works by getting everything set up the way you want it and then hit the "M" button and then whichever memory position you want (1, 2 or 3) and that is it. KEY memory works but having the seats where you want them and then locking the door with the key fob. Next time you unlock the door with that key, the seats, outside mirrors ans HVAC setting will return to where they were when you locked the door. [fake]

I'm not sure if this is totaly correct but I remember seeing something about this on the CD I got with my car. It said your dealer can program the key to have memory of a varity of functions when you unlock the car with a specific color coded key.

1. return seat to your programed position.
2. side mirror.
3. radio to your prefered station
4. radio volume.
5. climit control

Well said, right on the money. Also note that on BMWs equipped with a power tilt wheel, the wheel position is part of the key and seat memory settings.

The trick is to ALWAYS lock the vehicle when you get out. If you don't lock it, the key will not sync up with the settings. Like if you leave it in the garage and don't lock it, and your wife gets in and uses a different key, then your settings are lost (not mated to your key).

Also the closing of the windows and sunroof is accomplished by putting the key in the door, turning to the lock position and holding it there. All the windows and sunroof will close as long as you hold the key or until they are fully closed.

You cannot close the windows and sunroof remotely, unlike the opening feature.

This is correct, but this feature still has to be enabled by the dealer. I had to make a special trip to the dealer with my ''00 328i for this. Once enabled, it was a very nice feature.

When I brought my 2003 325i, the dealer told me that key memory would remember and auto adjust seat position according to which key was used to unlock the car.

When it did not work at home, I brought the car back to the dealer (Autobahn BMW in Fort Worth). The service department said that they cannot enable the feature for me. They said on some late model 2003 and 2004 3-series, the seat adjustment was disable from the factory and the current computer program they have in the service bay cannot activiate that feature. They told me to wait a few month and hopefully a new download of the computer program will allow them to enable seat-memory via the keys. [?|]

Can someone confirm this? Is there a service bulletin for this?

Achaung while not exactly why my dealer told me it is close. I was advised that the service department's software would not work on my August 2003 delivery 300i and that they needed an upgrade. Given the number of cars BMW sells with electric seats this sounds strange to me.

Our 325i was purchased in March 2003. The dealer was able to program the car memory so that when I unlock the car the seats and outside mirrors automatically change to my settings. Ditto for my spouse's key.
