Hehe, I have a story that touches on some of the bizarreness of BMW’s and their fine quirks.
I went and filled my car up with some fuel and checked the oil as I always do. I shut the hood to the car and proceed to my brother’s house some 30 miles away. On the way there I stop at the store to pick up some beverages (New Years). I get back in, start the car, and place the SMG II into neutral and start the car, place into gear (Reverse) the car just revs. At this point the SMG audio warning sounds. With an SMG gearbox when you stop the car and turn the car off, if the SMG II gearbox is not in a gear (non-neutral) it will sound an audible sound to let you know to place into a gear for parking for safety. Then the reverse light (“R”) just flashed and will not move no matter what gear I place it in. I turn the car off and on again a couple of time, but the same thing happened each time.
I place the car into drive (have to be careful to not lurch forward and damage my spook) and the car just sits and revs again with the same audible warning sound. I start to get worried and wonder WTF? After calming down (all the while people were wondering what the hell I was doing sitting in the parking lot revving the motor I remember that the car will not go into gear when the hood (bonnet) is ajar. I get out and see the hood is indeed popped open a bit. I open and shut and get in, put car into reverse, and bingo drive away like nothing happened.
You have to know how the SMG II works to fully know what I am talking about with the warnings and such.
BMW's have quirky faults that if you don't know the car real well they can leave you stumped from time to time. Sometimes it's a love/hate relationship.....
