Key will open but not close...hmmm

So as of yesterday my key will not lock my car. I think it is odd considering the fact that it will open the car no problem. Could this be a battery issue or would it require a new key? Anyone else have this problem before?

You only have one key? If you try the other key with the same results then it could be a coding issue and you need to have a dealer look at it.

I had two keys until about a month ago when someone took my keys with them thinking they were theirs. So I have to get another one made as a spare. This one has not given me problems until last night. I wonder if the cold has anything to do with it?

This may sound crazy, but open and close your trunk. I thought I had the same problem, but it was my trunk sensor indicating an open trunk so it wouldn't let me lock the car.

I have had a similar problem, and resetting both keys, solved the issue. You will find the recipe without too much searching on the net. Here one iteration:

Remote Key Re-Initialise - If a key fails to operate remotely, it will have to be re-initialised (all keys in sequence at the same time)

- Get in and “close all doors”

- Turn ignition on & off quickly (no more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds

- First key - hold down button #2 (unlock) while striking button #1 (lock) three times. Release button #2. Confirmed by door lock operation.

- Repeat for second key within 30 seconds of first.

- After last key then cycle the ignition on/off to finalise the process (not necessary to start the engine.

Both keys should now have new "randomly selected" security "code words" - asigned by the car's system.
Those codes will be continuously incremented within the new sequence each time you hit a button. It is when they get out of sequence with the car that they loose the capability to be recognised and you then have to do this again.

That occurs when you take longer than 1 minute changing the battery, or if you hit buttons more often the 1000 times when it is out of range of the car.

Hehe, I have a story that touches on some of the bizarreness of BMW’s and their fine quirks.

I went and filled my car up with some fuel and checked the oil as I always do. I shut the hood to the car and proceed to my brother’s house some 30 miles away. On the way there I stop at the store to pick up some beverages (New Years). I get back in, start the car, and place the SMG II into neutral and start the car, place into gear (Reverse) the car just revs. At this point the SMG audio warning sounds. With an SMG gearbox when you stop the car and turn the car off, if the SMG II gearbox is not in a gear (non-neutral) it will sound an audible sound to let you know to place into a gear for parking for safety. Then the reverse light (“R”) just flashed and will not move no matter what gear I place it in. I turn the car off and on again a couple of time, but the same thing happened each time.

I place the car into drive (have to be careful to not lurch forward and damage my spook) and the car just sits and revs again with the same audible warning sound. I start to get worried and wonder WTF? After calming down (all the while people were wondering what the hell I was doing sitting in the parking lot revving the motor I remember that the car will not go into gear when the hood (bonnet) is ajar. I get out and see the hood is indeed popped open a bit. I open and shut and get in, put car into reverse, and bingo drive away like nothing happened.

You have to know how the SMG II works to fully know what I am talking about with the warnings and such.

BMW's have quirky faults that if you don't know the car real well they can leave you stumped from time to time. Sometimes it's a love/hate relationship.....

On a similar note to ///M, great story by the way ///M......One time I accidentally (unknowingly) locked my doors with the key fob while inside the car. Guess what happens when you do that? None of the door handles work from the inside!!! Also, you cannot open the doors with the inside door lock switch.....so I am freaking out as I think my doors don't work and I am stuck IN the car. So after about a minute of panic...I finally think to try opening the doors with my key fob...and voila!!! I was so puzzled.....damn quirky BMWs!!!

Thank you bmwrocks, great story as well. I didn't know that about our cars too. It seems no matter how long you own your car you/we always seem to find out new things about them. I believe that this is one of the greatest assets of having access and being a member of Tom's wonderful site/forum. There can be a wealth of knowledge learned by just logging on and asking/reading.

Other forums are great and my provide more info from just the sheer size and member population, but that is the main reason I love it here the most. It seems more personal, feel at home, and not nearly as many stupid flame wars.

Thanks again Tom for the great site to learn, teach, share, and just plain out have a nice place to spend some quality computer time. Cheers mate....

Long live Hotbimmer…..

Help with remote key

I cannot lock the car using the remote key. I can open it, and the trunk but cannot lock it. Using my other key, I can complete all operations.
Can anyone tell me whether the key is bad?
Or is it that the remote key has lost part of the programming?
Also, if the key is bad, how much will it cost for me to get a new key?
Many thanks.

It sounds like there is something wrong with the key if the other one can complete all of the operations normally. Try the programming sequence further up in this thread, if that doesn't work you may need to take it to the dealership and see if they can get it working, or you may need to get a new key. lilbimmer (Kareem) found this web site that has the key for a cheaper price. Might be a good idea to check it out.
