Shit, 150km to your tank is pretty bad. My car does at LEAST 400km to a 55L tank. Admittedly, it is a four-banger but 150km isn't right.

Is your car warming up properly? If it isn't it's most likely a dodgy thermostat (which is easy to fix) and a cool engine will always burn more fuel. Other than that i can't really think what would have such a bad effect on your fuel economy in isolation. How long since you've had your car serviced?

Keep me posted.

Yeah, 150k's per tank is rediculous, unless you're a complete and utter lead foot, but even then...

I too get just over 400k's to a tank, and that's with alot of city driving.

Chesty and i both had thermostat problems which increased fuel consumption noticeably. I'd be checking that out too.

Somethings not right i would suspect.

There's absolutely no way a normal running car, even at the TRACK (assuming a 14 - 16 gallon gas tank - 53 - 65 liters) will only get 150km per tank. I get 560 km/tank (350miles) and thats barely after the low fuel light comes on. I have a 325is and I sure as hell do NOT drive slow.

Things that you need to check:
-Oxygen sensor
-Fuel Pressure regulator
-Thermostat (where does your temp needle run? if its below the middle line, replace the thermostat)
-Air filter
-Fuel filter
-Check gas lines for leaks (this sounds VERY likely - my fuel lines were leaking and it cost me all of $15 to replace them all)
-Charcoal canister (assuming it has one)

Also, how many gallons can you fit in at the pump? It might just not be filling it up the whole way, and if you had a bad gas guage it would leave you to believe you have a full tank.

just had a full service about 2 weeks back cost me $400 (eep) but that was also with a fuel line replacment.

from what you guys have said, sounds like a thermo stat problem, cause no matter how long \ far i drive, my temp gauge never gets that far from the blue line

im getting about 30 litres into the tank (keep pumping till the pump auto shuts off) and am pretty much driving it normally (cept for the odd occaision when p plater idiocy grabs ahold)

will have a look into the thermostat this weekend

Yeah sounds like your thermostat is rooted. This is exactly what mine was doing. This is EASY to fix. A new 'stat cost me about $50 and $5 for a gasket too. I posted a massive thread a while back for when i changed mine so search for that and this should help. Just remember that it should be even easier on your six-pot engine than it was on mine.

You should be able to get more than 30L of petrol into a tank... Mine is 55L. Perhaps you have a blockage somewhere because the thermostat alone will not cause such terrible fuel consumption.

Let us know anyway.

You could also have a bad cold start fuel valve that is dumping gas into the engine while it is hot or a bad thermo-time switch that is telling the cold start valve to stay open. This would cause the engine to be hard to start when it is warm and probably other problems so you can go from there.

A bad fuel injector may leak after the engine is shut off but this should not affect your mileage that drastically.

I assume you don't have the computer with the mileage (kilometerage?) display. What is the fuel economy gauge under the speedometer doing?

I get around 400m or about 643.73km a tank full. I don't baby her but I try to drive sensibly. Plenty of back roads to let her rip through when I'm in the mood which happens more often than not. When I traveled across the country my mileage would improve the faster I drove until I hit 95 or more, then she would start to drink heavily. Seems all the Dinan mods improved her breathing and my mileage when I opened her up. I have never tried driving in standard mode at or just under the speed limit, but according to my information I would most likely get close to 460m or more per tank full. I run Amsoil S2000 0W30, w/ Mann oil filters for 7500 OCI's. Since my last oil change I started using Lube Control (LC) in the crankcase at about 2oz every 1000miles and Fuel Power (FP) at 1oz for every 5gal of premium gas (93 octane). My MPG have improved around .91% in the city and 1.89% on the highway since using LC & FP.

Running better with a new thermostat? Of course, the engine will be running in normal operating temp. mode, not "warm up" mode.

OMG don't you think i know that! I just replaced the thermostat on my car about 1 month ago for crying out loud. I know what a thermostat does.

I was referring to the fact that i was astounded that his car didnt actually dave a thermostat. [mad] You're driving me insane epj3. [?|] [?|]

Should I replace my thermostat??

Mine never goes above the midway point, even when driving I was through the desert in Arizona this summer, in the middle of the afternoon.

It's normally just above the hash mark between cold and midway

I mostly freeway drive and I get about 22 miles to the gallon, I never thought of this as too bad, so I haven't put much thought into it. But, I kinda wondered why my thermostat never got very hot during my 3000 mile road trip this summer, especially when I noticed that my oil level reached the bottom dimple on the dipstick at one point.

Yeah all temperature gauges are different but if yours is hovering just above the first hash mark then it's probably too low. This is where my old one generally sat. Then again, I would advise to you not to rely solely on the gauge (unless it indicates virtually no warming-up at all).

The only thing i can say is that I knew my thermostat was buggered when cruising at low RPM when the weather was cold and my car was actually LOSING heat. My fuel consumption was deteriorating at the same time so I had pretty clear evidence that it was time to get a new 'stat.

So keep an eye on your consumption and watch your temp. gauge like a hawk (not so that you crash though! [hihi]) and then try to make a decision after that. Generally, freeway driving keeps very stable temperatures but if in city driving (like me) then your temp will be all over the place if the 'stat is gone.

BTW, my car now runs with the temp just between the 1st hash and the middle hash.

yer, my uncle and i had a bit of a laugh when we found out there was no thermostat in there hehe

changed up the fuel pump for a new one, new thermo, and did full engine diagnostics

my uncle lowered the rpms when the car is idling, and made the mixture "leaner" (dunno what that means, sorry)

BUT

the good news is, $246 later, i hit 320kms before needing to tank up, FIRST TIME EVER!!
and bout a quater of that tank had been without the thermo in so its only upwards from here

thanks alot for the help and suggestions guys, would never have though to ask bout the stat
