Not too bad, although I still think the current 3 series lines look so good, and I love the interior. I have seen a few pics of what the new interior should look like, and it is very 5/6/7 series. Personally, I don't like it...those weird awnings or curved covers over the instruments look odd to me. The current 3 series and X5 have classic, yet great BMW interiors. Perhaps beginning to look a bit long in the tooth, especially for the fickle auto industry...but in terms of interior styling and materials used....top quality.

Take a deep breath, and just tell ourselves a new 3 is coming....like it or not. It does look like someone did tie Bangle's hands down when designing the new 3...they were surely did not want to piss off hundreds of thousands of new 3 series buyers.

I saw some spy pics a few weeks ago, but they didn't look anything like that. The front end looked alot like the new 5-series and the tail lights resembled the back end of the X3. What gives?

Great post, DrivingTopless, thanks for the heads up. This is definitely no photoshop.

Looks like vanHooydonk may have brought them back from the brink. Thank god the shoulders aren't extra padded and the trunk isn't crazy "de-coupled"...and the headlights look somewhat purposeful but they still form the front corners of the car, which I think is just plain whacky with that cut coming across to the front wheels and just ending there. It's the same with the line from the hood to the A pillar. Why highlight cuts in the sheet metal that don't go anywhere?

Oh well, looks promising.

And I doubt those are turn signals on the mirrors. BMW's not gonna follow that trend. You can see the repeater signal on the side there.

What's going on with those offset fog lights? Could it be that the fog lights will only illuminate to the one side? Now that is cool and purposeful...I'm sick of all these cheap cars driving around with their fog lights on (Truck and SUV fog lights are higher than my headlights and wouldn't help much at all if there were actual FOG!!).

I don’t like it at all...

it doesn’t flow. When I walk into my garage and look at my Imola Red 300i ZHP I say what beautiful clean line car, it just works. The 2006 just doesn’t do it for me, kind of like the new 5 series something is missing [xx(]

I hope all the black stuff is just covering up details because as a designer I don't like it!
ya, its camoflauge, automakers dont like other seeing the little fine points that they try to cover up, i like the rims that they didn't put the BMW logo in it even though it just pops out when taking off the rims for exchanging tires with the spare

Well I understand why it's in the garage looking beautiful... the engine is missing![80?]

For some reason, the car looks smaller, but it probably isn't. Maybe it's the size or shape of the lights, especially the rears. Hopefully, it'll look better and sportier in person. Look at the picture pretending not to have any idea about whose car it is (ignore the grill shape especially) and just look at the side. What's your first guess?? My first thought is Saab or Fiat or something.

As I expected, no new coupe/cabrio until fall 06; glad I got my 04 330; should last until spring/summer 07, if I like the new one. I've also heard Lexus may start a "sport" division (a la M, AMG, ...) and may come out with a 4 seat convertible. Considering the quality, it will be tempting. Blasphemy, I know. [bash]

Lexus quality may take a dive if they launch a performance division.... Lexus being known for it's reserved, quiet engines and soft suspension and steering just might not have it in them for performance. Toyota just isn't a performance company.... unlike it's Japanese counterparts like Honda and Nissan. I have heard quite a few RX330 horror stories as well. You never see Toyota advertising performance and HP, they sell cars to their steady customer base who wants a quiet reliable affordable car. Performance cars with high out-put engines have never been ultra-reliable...

I've been looking for these for quite some time. Off hand, I'd say the front headlights remind me of the Acura TL's fronts. The big grill doesn't have any continuity with the headlights.

I'm not a big fan of the "great big grill" trend. I think it's too in your face and although cool now, won't really last. It looks ok on a dodge ram, but not on a compact sport car. The e36/e46 front double kidneys are perfect.

The rear lights remind me of the old altima actually. Or the new sentra (with the smallish tail brake lights). Makes me think of "beady little eyes", which by the way is not a compliment.

The side profile reminds me a bit of the older Volvo S40, which Volvo obviously thought was not agressive enough and solved it in their newest S40.

Somehow, I can't imagine BMW ruining the 3-series though. It could be that they are revealing these designs for the first time simply because they'd like press/fan feedback without actually having to ask for it. They can then change certain things subtly if necessary.
