I have a 1995 318i. It started running hot - losing water. We thought it was from the radiator but now can see its coming from the left side of the engine, behind the oil filter & alternator. Looks like it is leaking from somewhere around where a vacuum line is fastened in. Can anybody please help me. My dad is trying to help so I haven't taken it to any shop yet. The last time it ran hot it cost me $2500 from the mechanic from hell. Anyway, hope someone knows something. THANKS, Carol

I had a similar problem on my old 94 318is, but mine wasn't running hot, just leaking water.

A simple thing i guess is to check all your clamps and hoses.

Sorry I can't be of more help than that

As long as you don't drive it when it gets hot )i.e. as soon as the temp goes up, turn it off) you won't permanently damage anything - your $2500 bill was probably because you ran it hot and did untold internal damage.

Find the exact source of the leak and then someone can tekll you the best way to fix it.

Oh, and a 1995 3-series is the e36 model. You are in the e21/e30 forum. But that's no problem.

Sorry about that. But, I have a question on the running hot issue. My car was not steaming, smoking, smelling or anything. I heard the belt break and pulled over and immediately drove maybe 2 miles to the shop. Still no smell or smoke. Would that have busted the heads. I thought all kinds of dramatic stuff happened when the heads were busted. This question is about what happened last time not the leakage problem.
Just asking.

ps - i'll get in the right forum after this. thanks

Depends, you could have blown a head gasket or cracked or warped the head. Driving a car with no water in it is a big no-no, no matter how long for (broken belt prob water pump so no pump = no water).

Even if you didn't crack or warp the head, a blown head gasket still needs the head taken off and planed etc. I'm not saying you didn't get ripped off (maybe you did) but chances are that when it got hot, the head warped. No car likes runnning overheated, but BMWs especially don't like it.
