Light on bottom of mirror

Ok, so I made fun of it in 1998 when I ordered my 99 and It's still bothering me with the order of my 04. What's up with the red bulbous Starsky-and-Hutch-like light on the bottom of the rear-view mirror???

I have the BMW factory alarm on my 99 323 and will probably put the same alarm in my 04 330, and I know that it blinks to show it's armed, but is there any way to get rid of that without destroying the mirror?

Just curious, I know I'm being picky, but it just looks dumb.....

The manual (p.39) states "The indicator lamp below the interior rearview mirror flashes continuously; the system is armed." It's also used to switch the non-auto-dimming mirror between day and night driving. Don't know of any safe way to remove it.

yeah, most people agree it's an eyesore. That's why we call it a clownnose. Never heard of anyone taking it off though although anything is possible of course. I'm sure you could replace it with a regular mirror, but you'd probably lose any features that were in there (autodim, etc.)

It blinks rapidly the first 30 conds or so after it is armed... then a steady rate... good security.[fake]
