Lock Problems- Manual override not even working

In extreme temperatures, hot or cold, my key fob will not work...and neither will the center console button. Manual override of the doors doesn't work either, my concern is that my passengers would not be able to exit the vehicle in case of an emergency, etc...

My BMW servicing department can't figure out what it might be. Has anyone heard of this problem? Might it be the security system acting up in these temperatures?

Do the lock buttons go up and down but the door still won't open? If so, then the cable for the door handle may be misrouted around the airbag. The cable must go through the opening between the top airbag bolt and the airbag bolt nearest the hingeside of the door. It will "fit" in the other opening between the top airbag bolt and the outer airbag bolt, but the door won't open all the time.

The cable connects the door habdle on the inside to the latch in the door. If this cable is stretched just a little too taut the door won't open. You may look for obstructions along this line of thinking.

If your door locks won't go up and down, then I am no help.

Can you hear any relays or actuators switching or making noise even though the locks don't move? This would indicate the mechanisms are sticking maybe when cold (everything contracts and tightens up maybe). And in extreme heat everything expands causing it to bind up?

Thing is I have never had the extreme heat prob on either of my cars even when the temps here are in the upper 90s.....hmmmm

I've had this happen a couple times on me. I didn't know what was going on. I couldn't ge tthe remote to work. I entered the car using the key in the drivers door, but then the center unlock button wouldn't unlock the other doors or the trunk. And you can't unlock the doors from the inside when they are locked. It was like the car thought I shouldn't be inside becuase it had never received an unlock signal....even though I had pressed the key fob unlock button repeatedly, and I had gotten in the car by unlocking the driver's door.

I drove around a bit, relocked the car. Then, the remote decided to work again. It's only happened a couple times, so I haven't really looked into it.

Maybe the unit that receives the lock/unlock signal is growing old and becoming faulty? I changed over to my other key which is like brand new cuz it was never used. I haven't had a repeat of it since. (I'd love to know what your dealer ends up doing, because I'll probably have to do the same at some point.)

Odd... [confused] I've had mine do that exact same thing a couple times as well...

They have just diagnosed a faulty Central Locking Control...an estimated cost of over $700. Is it just me, or shouldn't BMW be responsible for a mechanical malfunction that posts a tremendous amount of danger for any passengers inside of my car...including me? The fact that there is NO way to manually override the doors opening, is terrifying to think of if an emergency were to occur. I have written to 4 different BMW customer relations sites today, hopefully I will hear back from one...and just maybe, they will take responsibility.

I am guessing from your comments that you have no warranty, cause I don't see your year or model in your posts or profile. I am afraid you are going to find out that BMW is not going to cover this on a vehicle out of warranty. I think the only things they cover when you are out of the regular warranty is rust perforation and maybe some emmisions control stuff. Safety issue or not, if it is not explicitly called out as covered you are SOL if they want to hold to their legal committment. Maybe they will be nice and cover it but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Good luck and I hope you get it covered.

Central Control unit? Damn. Did they give you a part number on the estimate, I'd like to look it up.
