Im sure everyone knows not to lock your keys in the car but I did it. They gave my three options, break a window, which would cost 189 to have reinstalled plus 20.00 for the tint ;) Drill behind the rear license plate and access a lock, Im not sure how they do that, but its 169. Or have a key overnighted from NJ for $220. Im in the process of having the key made, so I guess needless to say, make sure you have the spare key at all times...lol. Mine is on its way to Las Vegas right now, thats where Im moving to, so I was out of luck. They towed my car to the local BMW and come to find out they cant find my car, so they are looking for it right now and Im waiting for a call. Locking your keys in your car really sucks

Well on a warm summer day i went to start my car so that it would be cool when i got back in it. When i shut the door i noticed that the car had locked it self so not only were my keys in there but it was also running. you should have seen the look on my face my girlfriend said it was price less. Because i didn't have AAA i tried several things to get the car unlocked. What finally worked was a heat shield from a base board heater. Oh and by the way i was running on fumes.

Well here is one just for the sobs, go to the mall with my sister, in a conversation pull up get out, and when i get out i always make sure i lock my doors. Go inside for to shop for about an hour come back on its night time so i see my lights on. Not knowing whats going on becuase my lights turn off automatically I think to myself the only way those lights could be on is if my keys were in the ignition. So i then suddenly have a panic attack look grab my pockets, nothing, look in my sisters purse... nothing. Finally building the courage to walk up to the car i see my car just sitting there with keys in the ignition and the car still running. Ended up only paying 60 bucks to a key lock who knew some special trick on how to get a door unlocked, which in its own storie is a little creepy.

I'm pretty sure that those "Pop-A-Lock" guys can open pretty much any car. They slid some kind of a metal tool down the front driver window on my van a few years ago. They were done in less than 15 seconds.

what model car do u have? sorry to hear this happened and hope u get it resolved ok. (sounds like overnighting them a key's probably the lesser of all evils.)

for reference, on 99 & newer models, bmw provided a plastic, cabin entry key. it's flat & small enough to put inside your wallet or anywhere u normally wouldn't keep ur keys- specifically for times when u accidentally lock ur keys in the car. (this key won't start the car but only opens the car door.)

well I guess its not as bad as I was told. I went to order the key and the parts guy said well if you are sure your keys are in the car, which I said they are in the child seat and u can see them, then you can order a lockout key, I guess its that plastic key to get in the car and thats it, it only cost my 48.56, alot better then 200. So the key will be here tomorow and BMW even gave me a loner for the day, thats prety nice of them

Can you imagine the look on ones face when it happens to a guy from Europe who's new in the USA. AND NO-ONE MENTIONED THIS STUPID FEATURE TO HIM!!!

Man I was pissed. I was about to go on a trip and was already late (that, btw, was of course my own mistake).

Is it a law that says that cars should have this 'nice' locking feature?

My doors only lock if the car starts moving faster than 5 miles
per hour. How are you folks getting auto-locked-out?

I know about 2 months ago I had them make it where my car would auto lock after 5 mph....but I have the habit of locking my car when I get out....and when I went to get my son out of his car seat I did that and went to grab a bag and accidently put my keys in his car seat...at least he was not in the car...then I think a window would of been broken instantly..

From what I know, no car in Europe locks the doors automatically with the engine started. Maybe some expensive cars do it after like 5mph to prevent car jacking. But you can actually open the doors while driving on all other cars. My own (germany-made) Bimmer has a little button next to the alarm lights button for locking the doors. But with that feauture, it is impossible to get locked out, due to the way it's built.

But I guess it's a safety feature right?

In my car, if the driver door is open, you cannot lock it with the button on the console. Pressing the button with the driver door open will lock the passenger door, but the driver door stays unlocked. This way you cannot lock your keys inside.

However, if the driver gets out and closes the door, then the passenger opens his door and locks the doors with the button, both doors will lock. This of course would allow you to lock the keys inside.

Sounds like that is what happened to romeoz?

BTW get out of the habit of locking the doors with the button. ALWAYS use your key. I was able to teach this to my 19 yr old when she was 16 and locked her keys in her car several times just because she was in the habit of using the button.

I have a habit of getting out of my car and once my wife opens the back door to get the kid out I lock the doors...but sometimes she makes me get him out which is what I did....this is the second time I did it but the first time I was able to get a ride to my house and get my spare key :)

Not if you have a pet or small child. There have been a lotta stories of people at gas stations or whatever that get out to pump gas. Dog/cat steps on that lock and suddenly, you're locked out.
