Hi! I presently own a VW Jetta 2.0 GLS (Yes, I know, what a performance machine!). I am looking at a 1999 BMW 323i. The specs are as follows:
Mileage: 78,000 miles
Color: Bluish Gray (Dark Blue Metallic?)
Interior: Tan Leather
Transmission: 5 speed manual
Options: Sport Package.

Now, I am fairly capable of driving a manual as I have driven several vehicles with them. However, I am completely unfamiliar with RWD. I know it's supposed to have better roadfeel, which I would like, but I am mildly concerned with the proposition of winter. Living in Wisconsin, we get a fair amount of snow. My Jetta has been a dream in this regard, with a good set of all season tires I have never slid in it, even while provoked. I am wondering about some experiences/suggestions.

Also, my Jetta has been a mild nightmare as far as maintenance. I probably have a mildly isolated case, but I spent several thousand dollars over the first year of ownership (which is just now coming to a close for me) just to keep the darn thing running. Sensors, a tranny speedometer gear, various things. I am wondering if I could trust a well-cared for BMW (the one I am looking at still looks brand new, completely) to be a reliable care, minus a few things here and there. I am also curious about the overall repair costs as compared to a Volkswagen. This is of concern to me because I am still fairly young.

Any other information, tips, hints, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest continued research and don't jump on the first one you see. Test drive a couple times. I've had several minor issues w/ mine and i'm at 50k+.. nothing major (knock on wood)...

My suggestion... don't get overzealous and be patient... I almost bought the first one i test drove.. waited a couple months and got the one i wanted

That's some very good advice. I think that's the problem with the car I purchased now. It was in excellent condition when I got it (It's about 6 years old, a 99, and people still get in and ask me if it's brand new), but it was a lease vehicle and had thousands of dollars of problems within the first few months, even though there was nothing wrong when I purchased it. So I definately plan on being cautious with my next purchase. Especially when I'm getting a higher class car than I maybe should be.
