i'm preparing info for my E30 page and I'm completely lost in E30 models and engines they used... as far as I understand E30 had m10 m20 m21 m30(South Africa BMW e30 333i model) m40 m42 and s14 engines??? But some internet sources say that later versions of BMW E30 325iS used the M50 engine. Is it right????????????????? I've seen some photos with m50 engine in a e30 but aren't those just a swap???

thanx in advance;]

The M50 is definitely an E36 engine. What sometimes leads to confusion is the 1992 E30 Cabrio had the M20 while the 1992 E36 other models used the M50. 1992 had both E30ic and E36 models each with different engines. Engine swaps are relatively common especially as the E30 continues to age. The later 318i and the 318is both use the M42 engine. The s is a 2dr and a suspension and trim package.

a friend of mine has an S52 or M52 (wow, can't remember, 1998 M3 Motor) in his '87 325iS. its the swap of a life time, that car just rocks. sorry, i know it doens't pertain to the subject, just wanted to share.

btw, he has a very tasty 332iS badge on the back.[thumb]

The 318is is a sport package. The fact that it happened to be the one that they threw the M42 engine in is just a coincidence. M3 engine is an S50/ 52. The euorpean version of this is the S50 B30. As far as american E30's go there is a 325is, 318is, 318i, 325e, 325es, 325i, 325ix, and the specialties (B6, etc.)
