Okay, still learning, but I remember about turning off the the DSC (I hope thats what it's called)..but, still learning the car...

anyway, pulled out a driveway today onto cobblestone (dry and 70 degrees) and nailed it... at the top of first gear (sport mode of course) the flashing yellow light on the dash caught my eye... the car stayed straight-ish kinda, so I held the pedal down... it shifted and the flashing slowly faded out...

two quick things...

I believe that meant traction was minimal and the computer was assisting me with minimizing wheel-spin.. (oh yeah, turn that off and you can squeal the tires)....

How the HELL are you supposed to be watching for the yellow thingy to flash when your hard out accelerating and dealing with possible rear-end kick-out, traffic, etc... they should make it beep for you (like my brothers lexus... it beeps slowly until a solid tone when you are s.o.l.)

okay, all for now... 6 more months on the rock!

You said it correctly with the DSC engaged, and it flashes that means that the computer is letting you know that it is actively working to keep the car stable. Kind of an information bulletin. I have gotten that a couple of times doing a downshift from 4th to 2nd as well as 3rd to 2nd while giving copious amount of throttle. [whip] [clap]

whenever your car detects wheel spin the light will come on, whether it be from a bump or slippery road or whatever.

as for not being able to see it, i think it just flashes to tell you that it's working, and you can catch it in the corner of your eye, last thing i want during a sprited driving is the amber dsc light blinking right in my face.

then again, i find it annoying to see the amber dsc and brake light that comes on when the system is completely off. (hold down for like 5 secs to get the brake assist off too) [:D]

mikev,..

Not all of us here have 325i's and could enjoy quality life without DSC [rolleyes] ... people with 330's and above have to suffer and relly on the system to save us from time to time. [bigcry]

My DSC thingy flashes all of the time. [wiggle]

At first I did not know what it was[paranoid]

[idea] Then I decided to look it up in the book[:D]

I notice it most often around corners, ramps, and when accelerating from a stop. [rolleyes]

why do you think a 330 or higher needs DSC to be safe? let me tell lyou something: one who is not able to drive a powerfull car without electronic gadgets that keep him on the road, should not be allowed to drive it. period. that is a big mistake in my eyes. somehow like giving someone a gun and taking the security switch away....dang before giving someone a gun, make sure he knows how to operate it properly. geeez...

the DSC goes on on uneven road? heck it's the drivers fault and not the DSC's one. on uneven road you better don't floor it. easy as that.

Kommandant sir,

What about unforeseen hazards like grandma cutting you off, or someone pulling out into your lane at 20 when you're going 80? Or hitting unexpected gravel, or "black ice" in a curve?

Would you like me to give up ABS too? Who needs it because if you knew how to brake properly you shouldn't need ABS.

I love my BMW electronics, it's part of the reason our cars rule the road the way they do.....

sorry bmwrocks, but ABS is not what i was referring too. that has nothing to do with driving capabilities. emergency situations are a totally different story. i love my little helpers and love that others do have them.

as for ASC and DSC and ESP i love them too. The only thing i was saying is, that it is absolut false and dangerous to say and think a car needs DSC to be safe. it is the driver that makes the car safe not the electronics. in those minds, it may happen that they simply go too fast, even for the electronic helper because they have no clue how the car really feels and what the real limits are. that is why i think that statement is so dangerous!

exaggerate that scenario. a ferrari with ASC or however it is called in italy driven by a person of that kind. a potential killer as there is absolutly a total ignorance about how to drive the car safely and that is the real thing that makes a good driver or not.

at least my 0.02US$ at an ecxchange of 1.20 to the EURO....
