Steptronic is BMW's marketing term for automatic with manumatic shifter... Unless you mean Sport mode over shifting through m1,2,3,4, and 5? In that case Sport Mode has been proven to provide faster acceleration.

I think you mean, between the 99 e46 (auto) and 00+ e46 steptronic(w/ 'sport mode')?

The 99 e46 is a full sliding auto, like most cars.

The 00 is when steptronic came into play in the e46. Still auto, but you can move it to manual gear change, and also 'sport' mode where it shifts more aggressively on it's own for you. It's a 'stick' but still slides like auto. (little softer)

I'd guess the step in sport mode should be faster than straight auto - however slight?

I would estimate about a second... since in D it needs a moment to pick up and downshift (you have to press the pedal all the way down) while in Sport mode if you go halfway it tends to downshift quicker... (might be just my car) I also can make the tires chirp with DSC not going off (turned on) when in Sport mode accelerating hard from a stop. [burnout]

I believe that on regular automatics, the tranny is in "sport" mode once the shifter is moved down to "3" from "D". I am saying this just to illustrate that the regular auto tranny can also be in sport mode. Another thing is that you can put it into the "M" mode and you can shift it manually just like a steptronic but you have to move the shifter from the different positions "1", "2", "3", "D".

But wouldn't you be stuck in 3rd gear then? Sport mode has 4 and 5...

I think on regular automatics, if you drop it to "3", it just won't shift past 3rd gear. Sport mode actually has different software changing the shift patterns and stuff. Regular autos likely don't.

Yes and yes. You can 'do' the same thing steptronic does on it's own with a standard auto, it's just not as good or 'clean' I guess is the point. Putting it in sports mode causes it to shift more aggressively (on it's own) - basically it goes higher into the RPM's before shifting, and downshifts sooner to allow you to be in the 'powerband' more. Sure you can do the same thing in a standard auto, but then it's not 'auto' anymore if you're doing it?

Doing it manually in a step is still 'cleaner' than a full auto going 1, 2, 3, D. You've got the full 5 gears that you can flick through pretty fast(instead of 3 and D), No ratcheting, just tap tap on the stick.

I've done the 1,2,3,D in my last car (that and 'overdrive' - yah right..). I'd take step over that if I had a choice any day.

You are correct, it will not go past third gear but on the E36 its not really a problem since you only have four gears and I don't think you would need the forth while darting down a straight unless the straight is very long. I stand corrected.
