'87 325. Speedometer works, but mileage counter quit. I am the second owner with 138,674 documented original miles. The mileage counter quit working about 20 miles away from home, and I can't seem to find the problem. I don't want to continue driving without it working, so does anyone have any advice that could be helpful? Thanks in advance.

Check the gears, when my first one quit it was because the gear moved over for some reason, just take the plastic side of and resecure them, otherwise buy a new one.

I can almost guarantee you that one of your odometer gears is broken. The plastics BMW/VDO/Motometer used for these gears don't survive in the American climate. The odometer in my '87 325 broke when the previous owner owned it. He replaced the entire cluster to fix it. YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS OR EVEN REPLACE THE SPEEDOMETER!!

A week after I bought the car, the odometer quit again. I took the cluster out and looked at the odometer gears - sure enough one of them had broken right down the middle. Instead of spending a ton of money on a new speedo - just go to www.odometergears.com. This guy makes the replacement gears himself and sells them individually. You'll need to remove your speedometer to see which gear you need before ordering - there are several. I bought the broken gear from this guy and the odometer works great now. $29 for the new gear is a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing the speedo if the speedo still works. It's an easy job to remove the speedo and replace the gears - I can remove and replace the speedo from the car in about 20-30 minutes.

If you need more help, just let me know. I can help you through the process step by step if you need it.

Thanks for all the help guys! I removed my speedometer today and found the small gear was stripped. All the gears were soft and some of the teeth broke off just from touching them! I went to the odometergears website and am sending them a cashier's check tomorrow. Thanks again.
