The passenger side goes down to help you see the curb when backing up (parallel parking etc). I think if you set the mirror switch to the passenger side the mirror won't turn down when you put the car in reverse. [thumb]

LOL... When I got my 5er I was equally as confused. If you switch the mirror selector to the other side the mirror will not adjust itself.

No, it's there for manuals too. I dunno if it was an option or if it always was standard or what tho. It wasn't something I was really aware about when I bought my car. Apparently, it's standard on the 03 models.

If you have it, it should automatically engage when you put your car in reverse.
If I might add to Tom's statement: The mirror select switch on the driver door needs to be set to "driver side" also, then it tilts down automatically in reverse.

our 98 540 had it. my 98 E36 didn´t. it is part of the packages you can get and actually order for your car. some premium or comfort package will have it and when you buy the performance package it contains the premium or comfort stuff right away
