Was wondering if anyone knew what would cause a high MPG apart from the obvious hard driving. My car has 17,000km (10,500mi) and is always serviced by the dealer. I don't drive harshly often, very rarely in fact, and my MPG seems to be quite low. Getting 13.6L/100kms (17MPG) and I'm not sure if that's abnormal for my car since it's only a 2.2L.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 05 325i and when I drive city...about 10 miles to work one way, I get about 17-18 mpg. But when I go on a trip I get 30-32 mpg.....I to want to know whats up with the low mpg in the city.

Almost as important as how you drive is how far you drive. If your trips are on the shorter side (< 15km) your mpg will suffer. My avg trip use to be @10km and I'd get about 17 mpg. Since I've moved to a new place, my trips are @ 15km and my mgp has increased to 19-19.5 mpg. These mpg #'s are not calulated by the computer, but manually after each fill-up.

City, I get 15-16 mpg (there are lots of hills around here). Pure highway on cruise control, I've gotten 30 or so.

And yeah, I agree that how long your trips are matters. My freeway mileage is better when on a long road trip rather than a shorter freeway blast.

How many lights are you stopping and starting at? How often do you slow down and then speed up again. That type of typical city driving will kill most MPG figures. Just watch your instant mpg gauge as you accelerate even slowly, it will go off the scale (the bad end). Don't blame the car, blame the city traffic!

Hi Tazza,

I'm doing 9 l/100Km in the city and some 7 l/Km on the highway (cruise control 110Km/h) with 95 octanes.
It is a 2.2l 320i with M-Sport package.

I've been working about 50 minutes away from home for the past two weeks, and most of the drive is on the motorway at about 90-120km/h. Consumption has dropped to 10.9L/100km but as soon as I start driving in start/stop conditions again, it creeps back up over 11L.

I have the same car as you Stressed, 320i 2.2L and you're getting much better economy. I don't really push it that hard either so who knows. At this consumption rate I'm getting about 650km per tank as opposed to the normal 450km in city conditions. I'm just used to filling it up every week.

mpg

We've always been mileage junkies, ever since we got 34mpg out of a 96 T5 Volvo wagon!

Our 01 sportwagon seems to average 24-25mpg. We can get it up to 30 on a long trip, or 27 for awhile... but the city driving hits us hard. I notice if I manually shift the auto to keep the rpm's higher, the mileage does better than the auto.

when i shift around 2.5k to 3k, i can get around 325 to 330 miles per tank. when i shift around 4k to 5k i get around 300 even. i have 87k miles and am going on my 8th year of ownership. i love driving tho, so even in my daily commute i'm typically shifting at around 5k. :)
